Having lost all my waypoints when the plotter crashed and had to be rebooted a while ago, I thought it is about time that I backed up my data. Bought a compact flash card and followed the instructions in the manual but it didn't work. Just got a "failed save" message.
No clues in the manual as to what the problem is. Could ask Raymarine but past experience has shown that you experts out there are more helpful!!!

Are you sure the backup card is inserted all the way. We bought a non-branded version which works OK but needs pliers to remove it as the plastic casing is slightly oversize and needs a firm push to insert correctly -- of course make sure it's the right way round!

When I was updating the software in my C80 I had to use an old small capacity CF card. It would not work with a new 1 or 2gb card. I found an old 32mb cf card and it was fine. I think it may be the same for backing up waypoints etc.

From the Ray website: (this relates to updating software but will also be relevant for backing up data)

Lower capacity SanDisk brand CF memory cards are now challenging to locate locally and are most easily purchased via the Internet. Should one purchase one of these CF memory cards, it is recommended that the compatibility tool then be used to check the card prior to using the memory card with the MFD.

To be clear, you are supposed to copy the .pkg file and .dob file to the root level directory of a SanDisk brand CF memory card having a capacity of no more than 256MB and no less than 32MB.

Thanks for help guys. If card capacity is a limit then I'm scuppered - the one I have is 4Gb.
I did wonder about the formatting bit though - do cards come ready formatted? If not, presumably I need a card reader (which I don't have!) on the laptop to format it?

I would say that it is almost certainly the 4gb card that is the problem. Get yourself a 32 or 64mb one from eBay, interestingly they are relatively expensive due to rarity I suspect, and you should be good to go.
