I have an old bi data that seems to be on its last legs. The speed works fine (the instrument not the drug) but the depth seems to dispaly random numbers, sometimes only about 20m out at other 200 or so out and at others the numbers just cycle up or down continuously. Any ideas?

Very likely the transducer is U/S. Display is obviously OK 'cos the speed works.

I have a humminbird that does something similar. It can be coerced into working
by switching it on and off a number of times, then it settles down.

Mind you these tri data instruments clipper et al, are so cheap now, it's hardly worth messing about. Rip it out and put a new one in next time you're out of the water. Is it your only source of depth and speed?

Steve.

humminbird depth

steve,

did you know that if you press and hold the "on" button on a Humminbird it goes into display mode? If you give the button just a quick jab it comes on and works as it should. Had this problem after fitting a Humminbird unit (and losing the instruction book) on a mate's boat. Took us about two weeks to figure it out!

Suggest you give Raymarine in Portsmouth a call and talk to their Technical Dept.
If it,s the transducer that's at fault a new one is not that expensive and comes with a housing with a valve to stop water coming in when you need to clean the impellor.
