Bit confused..... watched a you tube video about installing Raymarine AIS700. Apparently he was told by Raymarine UK that the 700 needs its own GNSS GPS which is supplied and that the plotter etc needs its own as well. So You need two for the system to display on the chart plotter????? WTF this cant be correct. Will be getting one soon so need to work this out before taking apart what i have already got on the boat.

Not quite correct.

The AIS700, like any other transmit AIS, has to have a dedicated GPS. However, the AIS will have NMEA and/or NMEA2000 output which can be used to send GPS data to the plotter.

By the way, the AIS700 is an overpriced AIS, manufactured by SRT for Raymarine. SRT is the parent company of Em-trak, who's AIS will do everything the Raymarine one will, for less money.

Edit: The Em-trak AIS has a built in GPS, so no need to fit an external one.

I have this set up. You definitely need the GNSS aerial provided with the AIS 700. But you don’t need a second GNSS aerial for the plotter. At least, you don’t for Axioms.

Wish I knew that over 4 years ago Paul. Having said that I'm pleased with my unit.

@MAURICE My raymarine eS mdf has its own built in aerial so The 2 units are independent, so to speak.

You don't need a second GPS with an Axiom, because it has one built in.

A plotter that doesn't have an internal GPS would need a second GPS or connect the plotter to the AIS NMEA output (which you would do anyway to get AIS targets on the plotter.
