Anyone got this silent switch set up on their Raymarine AIS 650? We have the switch but it only switches to silent mode. To transmit again you need to go into the Plotter settings. Is this normal? Thanks.

We don't have a switch as silent mode can be turned both on and off via the plotter.

Hi. Yes ours is same you can use the plotter settings, just saves messing about in plotter. With it having dedicated switch I thought it should do both functions on and off. Not sure why it doesn't and only switches into silent.

I suggest you contact Raymarine technical help by email.

I don't have a silent mode switch fitted . I don't feel need for it.
You could simply leave the switch in the off position and ignore it if that is causing no issues.

Its not a problem really. Just like things to work as they should. Raymarine UK say it doesn't work to switch out of silent mode. Raymarine in USA say it work both ways. Just interested if anyone with same system had tried it, and if I needed to alter settings or something to make it work in both modes without going into plotter.

What about the plotter's firmware?
It could be that switching it off and ignoring the AIS's switch

It is a complete new system with ES128 plotter. When Raymarine fitted it they updated everything. It works fine and you can switch AIS on and off at plotter. If you use switch it goes into silent mode but will not switch back to transmit without going into plotter settings. At first Raymarine said it was the AIS at fault and would change it for another. Then they said no this is how it should be. I emailed Raymarine in US who said it should work both ways from the switch. Just a little confused who is correct. Thought if someone had same set up they would know best. Its no big deal just interested to know whats correct, and if it is just something in the settings that need changing to make it work both ways at switch. Raymarine instruction book seems to indicate it should switch on and off at switch but its a little vague.

I fitted a switch when I installed my AIS 650 and I can confirm it works both ways without resorting to the plotter.

I think it says that when your mfd is turned on the switch will work as you have found, but when the mfd is off it will work both ways.

I tried it without the MFD es128 been switched on just the I70 display and the switch worked perfect on and off silence mode. Then switched on the MFD es128 and the switch only worked to switch the silence mode on. I guess its one of lifes mysteries.

God knows how the minds of the developers work. I wanted a manual switch because its quicker/easier than the plotter menu not because I might want to control it when my MFD is off, but perhaps I am in the minority!

Just for an update on silent switch problem.
After emails to Raymarine it appears that previous models of MFDs could change to silent mode and back to transmit via the switch. Unfortunately the new ES models cannot allow you to do this. The reason they gave is customer feedback?? Which seems strange as I thought that was the purpose of the switch, to make life a bit easier. Anyway from Raymarine " You can get a 3rd party converter, that’ll bridge NMEA0183 AIS data onto STng, such as the Antisense NGW-1 converter, but this is an additional cost unfortunately" Not sure what this is or how it will work.
Far too confusing for me so I guess I will have to use the MFD.
