Hi All,

Im looking for some advice on a rather irritating problem.

Since early January our Raymarine A60 chartplotter has had difficulty getting a signal fix from cold start. I have just about tried everything and can't seem to find a cause.

Eventually it will get signal and remain fine for the remainder of the day.

As soon as we arrive on the boat I turn on the batteries and then switch on the plotter. It switches on perfectly and within a few seconds shows the depth, battery voltage, temperature etc but won't get a signal. Sometimes if I leave it for approx 15 mins then switch it on and off it will work. I have tried it with the engine running to see if the power has any cause but this hasn't made any difference. I also wondered whether the link between the radio and plotter was causing an issue so tried with the radio on and off but still nothing. On Saturday it was still playing up and eventually it only got a signal when I gave the receiver on the roof a tap. On start up yesterday it again wouldn't get a signal, a tap to the antenna did nothing this time so I removed the cable from the back of the plotter and re connected. It got a signal straight away! However the annoything thing is that this isn't always the case, this was the first time that removing the cable achieved anything!

The dealer that we bought the boat off gave us a new A60 unit to try and that also failed to achieve a signal so i'm 99% sure its got something to do with the antenna or cable.

The next step now is to have a new antenna fitted to the roof which is apparently a nightmare of a job due to the cable route back to the unit. The current receiver is a RS12 but the broker who will be undertaking the warranty work has advised that this receiver is no longer fitted and depending on the new receiver they may have to leave the RS12 in place to fit a replacement close by.

Looking at the Raymarine website it seems they still supply the RS12 though.

So do others agree that it looks as if the antenna is at fault??

Is there anything else that I could do to try and fault find. One rather odd thing that I have noticed that may or may not be related is that the FM stereo will only get a clear FM signal if the chartplotter is switched off........

Thanks
Ian
