we are sailing and suddenly the display on our c120 failed and went into lines and dots as though the display or input was at fault. turned it off at power supply and came up failed again, then managed to turn it off on the button and on again and it seems to have recovered. has anyone had this problem and any ideas what it could be and if it is likely to fail again? could abandon our trip at this stage. called raymarine support but they are only open normal office hours. thks First Officer. (Tomahawk is helming)

Similar problem on my C70 is "fixed" by pressing firmly on the top edge of the screen surround. This stresses the connection Angus refers to and temporarily relieves the problem.
For a more permanent solution, disassembly is required.

Earlier this year had a similar issue - followed by a continuous reboot.

Pressing around the screen seemed to fix the problem as Angus mentioned, and I disassembled the unit at the end of the summer and re-seated all the connectors.

However, a salutary lesson to be learned is to back up routes and waypoints at regular intervals.

Having manually loaded routes and waypoints a few days earlier for a West Country cruise, setting out from Ramsgate at 04:30 the plotter refused to power up and entered a continuous reboot loop. The only fix I found was a factory reset which clears everything from memory - not just routes and WPs but radar offsets etc and all other settings. At that hour of the morning not too much help around, but I did find the reset process online which was;

  • Press and hold down the first soft key (next to the power button.)
  • Keep holding the soft key down while the display reboots. A "Factory Reset" countdown will be displayed. Keep holding the first soft key until the countdown is complete.
  • The display should reboot into normal operating mode

Worth making a note of if all else fails!

VERY common fault on all the C-series. Raymarine would like you to take it back to them. As others have said a bit of judicious tapping/pressing round the plastic case can often reset the loose connection, once out of warranty you can unscrew back (LOTS of tiny screws - one under a warranty void sticker) and wiggle connectors and remove and replace one "piggy-back" circuit board, gets it going again for a few days/weeks/months/maybe a year. My local electronics agent has repaired mine twice, doing much the same but glueing some connectors in place. This seems to last longer than my own repairs, and was a lot cheaper than Raymarine's "fixed price repair".

Once again thanks to all.
It went on the blink again in the afternoon and we fixed it as suggested.
It is 8 years old now.. so I have been very pleased so far...
