Does anyone know the thread designation for an ST 1000 tiller pin? The bolt goes about 4 turns into a 1/4 UNF nut then jams.

Many thanks

I have received a reply from Raymarine, which was unrelated to this forum. The thread is 1/4 BSP. Now to find it in stainless

Thanks

1/4 BSP..... I think not. Thats over 1/2" diameter (17/32") with a pitch of 19 tpi !

I think you will find that it might be 1/4" BSF .. if its 1/4", not 6mm as you initially said

If its 6mm I am surprsied its not M6 or 0BA which is very close to M6. Interchangeable in fact.

Vic: it's a shade over 6mm, so probably 0.25in.

Then if its not 1/4 UNF its 1/4 BSF

That sounds like the unusual thread on the push rod (that makes peeps buy extensions at £25 a pop instead of using cheap studding!)

Actually I think that's 3/8 BSP at least mine is ... I'd not have guessed but i just measured it! Didn't pay that much for it I am sure but I did buy it 35 years ago.

Thanks for the responses. I pointed out to Raymarine that a 1/4 BSP tap drill would swallow the tiller pin, together with both nuts, and am still waiting for them to clarify what the thread is. The thread has a major diameter of about 6mm, I measured (micrometer) 236 thou, and a pitch of 0.94 mm (DTI 6 turns). The pin is retained by a bracket manufactured by Raymarine, which is drilled at 6.2mm to accept it.

The bolt won't quote fit an M6 nut, but will turns into a 1/4 UNF nut for four turns, when it locks.

1/4 BSF is 26TPI and major diameter of 0.250" is a possibility, (thanks VicS) but a strange design choice when M6 would do the job. Hangover from Autohelm perhaps.

Still waiting for Raymarine to get back to tell me what the thread is. That should not be a problem for them.

I was finally contacted by a Raymarine engineer who provided part spec and drawings for the Tiller Pin, which is obviously a legacy component. For the forum record, the thread is definitively 1/4 BSF.

Thanks Raymarine.

Raymarine may have been talking about the pedestal assembly screw thread. That is pretty big

The pedestal thread is a standard pipe thread. I wanted a spare pedestal, but didn't want to spend Raymarine's price, so I bought a suitable plumbing fitting with matching male thread at one end and a compression nut and olive at the other end. I took a length of phosphor bronze bar equal to the pedestal height and axially drilled it to make a socket for the autopilot spigot. A few turns of insulating tape to build up the diameter to that of a water pipe then, with the bottom level with the bottom of the fitting, I clamped them together with the compression nut. In use it feels nicer than the aluminium original, so that is now kept as the spare.

Thanks for that, great post in the true spirit of PBO. Any chance of a pic?

Bit off topic, but it used to be that you got a red feather thing for sailing to the wind instead. Do you still get this when you buy new?
