I purchased a Raymarine ST1000+ auto pilot at the boat show. SWMBO made final decision as it looked nicer than the Simrad - I had to agree.

Anyway it set us back £249. A good deal.

Went to boat at weekend and cogitated what accessories I would need to install it. These amounted to a "cantilever arm" (pilot to deck) and a "tiller bracket" (self explan).

I called the chandlery from the cockpit whilst sitting down - thank God.

The cantilever arm - a machined aluminium bar, threaded at on end - with a simple turned and threaded bracket - £39.95!!!!!!!! Much effing and blinding echoing round the boat yard.

The tiller bracket which in many ways was more complex £8.95 - much more acceptable.

I checked with Raymarine and the prices were correct.

Stap me vitals. Still can't wait to play with it though. And the autopilot.

Always ask the question, could I make it in less than the time it would take to earn the money to pay for it. If yes then DIY, if no accept the price. I find it makes you think.
