I'm in the process of upgrading engine from yanmar 3gmd 20 to a 30 ym, do I need to increase hose size from seacock to strainer in the same way as I need to increase size from raw water strainer to raw water pump ?

Also can a strainer be to small?

I can't see any point in one hose being larger than the other as the throughput is fixed so the smaller one will always be the "bottleneck". If you are changing one to fit in with a manufacturer's recommendation I think you need to change both ..... although whether the seacock then becomes the "bottleneck" is a moot point! Does you seacock meet the recommendation?

I would be very surprised if the filter will become the bottleneck unless you were to upgrade to a much bigger engine.

Surely the inlet pipe size to the sea water pump decides the strainer size - as long as this size on the strainer is the same or larger it will be fine - but as said check the inlet seacock! My Beta 25hp has a 3/4" hose size which is the same as the (new) water strainer and the inlet seacock.

Yes, the water strainer has to have the same diameter inlet and outlet as the seacock inlet. stick to the engine recommendation.
