Hi - Help appreciated

I have a leak from the lip seal at the back, and not having a workshop manual would appreciate answers to the following questions please. can you change the seal without taking the pump off, is it possible from the volute? or how do you get the pump off looking at the pump it seems there are 2 nots and bolts on the left side but the right side looks like bolts are coming from the back into threaded holes on the pump flange on the right side (or did Volvo not fit the nuts as threads painted! ) I dont see how I will get at bolts on the back without major stripping if this is so! Also anyone any idea how much this will cost via mechanic as i may not have time. many Thanks

Any idea where i can download a workshop manual?

HERE but it does not answer your question. Shows you how to change the impeller but thats it.

You are right about two of the bolts being put in from the back but i dont know how you remove them

There is no magic method. No other dismantling is required.
I have had the raw water pump off my 2020B a couple of times.
Its just a struggle.
A socket on a flexi shaft helps. Stanley do one, I got mine from B&Q a couple of years ago for this exact job it cost about £6. It comes with with an array of screwdriver heads but the 1/4 in drive will also take a small socket.
It will just about reach from the back of the engine.
The workshop manual is no help.
Lots of swearing helps.

Re: RAW WATER PUMP VOLVO MD2020 done it !

good morning , yes i have done this job 3 times , its quite simple .
first remove cover plate then ease out impeller with two small screwdrivers . then get your screwgun with a short magnetic tip and a self tapping ,raised head(for best grip) screw i use 3.5x 16 . it must be a self tapper sharp and pointed .

then drive the screw into the seal and then drive another opposite.
leave enough of the head to grab . then with two pairs of pliers PULL the seal out ! you,ll be amazed how simple it is . be sure to note which way the seal faces , then using the right size socket ,gently drift in the new seal .

if you look online you will find a new seal much cheaper than vp seals . BUT be very sure that it has a stainless steel spring ,otherwise it will rust out and your drip will return . yes i learnt the hard way ! 2x engines -3x seals

i paid£6.50 each i think the size is is 24x7 its stamped on the seal . i have a spare on board i will check the nos monday . sunday morning job /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: RAW WATER PUMP VOLVO MD2020 done it !

Many thanks all

Great idea with the 2 screws and dragit out other than there must be another seal behind the front water seal to stop the oil coming out and I feel if one seal has gone the other one probably has too! As the front seal seems to have a lot of rust flakes suspect someone didnt fit stainless! So it off with the pump.
Thanks your replies

There is also a very good chance that the shaft will be scored and need to be replaced.
If you get away with just replacing the seals you have been lucky.

Re: RAW WATER PUMP VOLVO MD2020 done it !

the first/front seal is the one that suffers as it is the seal that has seawater against it . the inner seal has oil so lasts longer and I have heard all the "scored shaft " stories and seen virtually none of it on my 6/8/10 year old pumps fine polish it .. I came across a spare pump on e bay for £ 60 from ajay trading in southampton. but its a tricky and slow process to fit it , 1/4 turns on the spanner for the back 2 nuts , and when I stripped down the removed pump , still no shaft wear so I have a spare . the part no is stamped on the cover plate , oh and another tip , when you remove the plate it will inevitably be scored where the impeller runs against it . no worries - TURN IT ROUND after removing the paint ,and hey, another 5 years wear ! make a note of the part no , its only stamped on the outside of the plate . go for it ,( new pumps are £300 )
