I use a Volvo outrdrive on the Thames through the middle of London. About every other trip I get overheating because of a blockage to the raw water inlet - plastic bag usually. Is there any reason why I shouldn't fit a basket type arrangement over the front of the inlet - but mounted say 6 inches in front, in order to ensure a flow of water even if there was a plastic bag on the basket?

It all sounds too simple to me - have I missed something?

no reason i can think of but it would have to be secured pretty well i'd imagine as the drag etc and the possibility of hitting underwater objects on it could be quite high, probablly ok on the thames at slow speeds but you might have to alter it if you were going fast at sea etc. although if it was shaped like a wedge it would present less drag and more surface area for the water to come in,
sounds like a good idea, all you need to find is some decent stainless mesh.possibly a local fabrication shop who makes/repairs things for the food industry might be able to help.i got an offcut from a non ferrous steel stockist theres probably one local to you
