Raw Water impelor

Any one got any good tricks for removing the impelor on my Perkins 4107.

Problem is that the engine compartment is accessed from the top but the impelor is on the front so is not easy to get at.

The impelor cover comes off OK but the rotor its self is plainly not going to just slide out.

Is there a gadget that will act as a puller?? Or anything along those lines?

i grab it with a pair of slip-joint pliers pushed between the blades. (assuming it will be relaced with a new one).

If you cant get slip joint pliers in, two small screwdrivers as levers sometimes works, failing that Jabsco do make special pullers, but it also might be an idea, to just remove the pump and then replace the impellor.

My boat is 40 yrs young, the port eng pump is on the outboard side up against the bulkhead allmost imposible to get to, this year i cut a hole in the bulkhead from the main cabin, easy strait pull, after all the years of skinned knuckels,

Personally use pump pliers, if a small pump, you can grind off the back of the pliers for better access.

A tip for getting the new one in is to wrap the outside with a couple of cable ties to squash the legs down, & lubricate with fairy liquid or similar. Dont expect full out put from the pump for ten hours, & it is not unknown for the new impellor to "moan" slightly till bedded in, (if your installation is particularly quiet)

from memory some of the impelors have a d wedge ??? to hold them on the shaft. so if yours has make shaw you catch it, some are on splines so no worries there.

David .. What are pump pliers? My problem is that I know Im not going to be able to get a solid pull from the front... Always the way.. everything else is laid out as though on a table top with access through the wheelhouse floor.

water pump pliers = slip-joint pliers:

angled jaws,handles have special grooved joint so they can be set to various widths. jaws fairly narrow.

I use a pair of cheap long nose pliers "modified" by bending the ends inwards so the easily grip the centre portion and just pull - but I do have access to the front of the engine.
To make it easier in future, I would cut a hole in front of the pump so you can access the pump from the front and then cover the hole with a nice piece of varnished plywood screwed in position - but not sure if this is possible on your installation...
