Two boats made it to Weymouth today. One with a shredded storm jib and another that had been pulled off rocks in Chapmans pool by the swannage lifeboat. Looks like they've had a diver down presumably to check keel.

Got to hand it to those boats, far braver than me!

(And well done to the lifeboat crew!)

Beg to differ, the lifeboat crews were brave, the yacht crews were foolish!

Not necessarily, clipping rocks is an error of judgement or momentary lapse of concentration. Perhaps not a day to take risks, but the sea is not rough there & they continued their journey with no problems once pulled clear.

Foolish implies deliberate ignoring of dangerous conditions or not taking sensible precautions. I don't see any evidence of that, although I may have preferred to give the rocks a wider berth myself. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They may even agree now /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Absolutely, Idiots!

They proved you wrong I think?

[/ QUOTE ] They went aground, nothing to do with the weather, nothing idiotic about it at all.

No, OF COURSE, you,r right nothing at all to do with their judgement/seamanship, but it PI##SSES me off, when I see the likes of them regarded as some sort of hero's, when the best I, and others can do for NCB, is 20% after 30yrs!!!
They, and Pillocks like them will have their 20% NCB again in max 3yrs.
Pity the Swanage boat didn,t charge for the tow, then again,I would still be paying for that via MY insurance premium, they are Idiots, certainly not 'heros', im not very ho, on this occasion. Bill.

The one thing I hate about this forum is the way people are so judgemental about other people without know the full facts. This may or may not be an error of seamanship we just don't know how it happened. Last month a lot of people here criticised a couple for abandoning their boat until some one who actually knew the real story spelled out the circumstances.

This should be a meeting place for friendly discussion, not a court to sit in judgement of other yachtsmen.

Fine, lets award the hero's medals for 'choosing' to go to sea, not caught out. Running aground is never fun, hope my premium isn,t up, a lot, again, to subsidise their bravado!

Why bother with insurance if you never make mistakes?

LOL! So true!

If Chapman's pool isn't a good place in a N wind where the hell is?

Yep. First trip down the creek with my wee craft - encountered the putty, very quietly and gradually - neaped - got her off 11 days later - I had the hastle, not an insurance company - very steep learning curve!

Because my boat is my home, and there are so many uninsured 'idiots' about. Or/and sadly, some dishonest folk who don,t leave a note.

Wasn,t great for them, or the L/B!

It must be nearly 20 years ago now, but when my partner and I did our Dazed Kipper RYA course, we anchored in Chapmas Pool for a lunch break. Whilst we were there, the "Helen Mary R" (a 57ft sail trining jobbie) came in to join us.

Unfortunately, she didn't make it all the way in, as she either grounded or hit a rock smack bang in the middle of the bay. Lots of kiddies running round on her decks for 5 minutes, with us getting ready to up anchor and offer a tow, but she managed to back off into deep water.

For some reason, she didn't come back! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
