Rather glad I'm still in the water

NOT if you're there,Roger!

<pedant>I was under the impression that the beaufort scale was based on sustained wind speeds, so the phrase 'gusting to force n' was incorrect. Comments please?</pedant>

You're not wrong

There's some sort of percentage, but I can't find out what percentage over the mean, a gust can be, and still remain say a F7. Also there is no time scale on a gust, if it's over in 10 seconds or if it lasts a minute or 10 mins

Now I just say we had gusts of up to say 40 knots (apparent or true) if I'm on the boat.

Fact is most of the time it would be a F7, but at times it would go up to F8...but if it's a F7 you would expect gust up to the wind range of F8 (34-40knots) anyway

Mast down is the ONLY way to do it. Was it last year some boats got blown over at Port Solent?

I thought most insurers now insisted on this.. which is rather unfair on us cats, they often don't distinguish mono/cats when they come up with daft rules and regs.

We are on the water, we use the boat as a cottage in winter, nothing as much fun as launching the dinghy in a gale, full oilies and lifejacket on, it looks like I am setting off on a round the world trip to cross the harbour.

It's great being one of the few boats still in commission at the moment. The last few weekends have curtailed sailing but facilitated those all important tasks of maintenance and sinking a few (too many?). Can't wait for Xmas - letting the weather decide (rather than SWMBO) our sailing plans over 10 days - what a mistress!

If these bloomin' gales will stop (please!) we'll be sailing Christmas Eve around to Newton Ferrers from where we will not move until Boxing day. Two Eberspachers will gently toast us with warm air and warm water and we shall be far from the madding crowd. Perfect.

That does sound good, but I can't say I fancy the trip round Lands End.

I'm all for keeping the boat in the water during winter. If anything it gets more use than in summer when there are other toys to play with. And winter racing is great fun.

Did that once on my old cat and was stuck on the boat for 3 days because of weather. never got out of the jim jams once aboard.
