I can’t be the only person on this forum that looks at the ‘Computer’ type conversations and hasn’t a clue what they’re about. I know absolutely nothing about computers being much more of a spanner man. I like the idea of what a raspberry pi can do on a boat so I bit the bullet and bought one. Now I need help. I have tried in vain to download open cpn. I have a 32gb card, have downloaded open cpn so that it appears in the downloads file but I don’t know how to open, run it or save it. I really do need step by step help on this. Any computer jargon is lost on me. Anyone who can offer instructions or point me in the right direction will be doing me a huge favour. Thanks. Alan

So you are probably going to need to give us a touch more info:

* What Operating System have you installed (Raspabian? OpenPlotter?)
* Are you working on the Pi on a monitor with a desktop or through a remote login and a terminal editor
* What is the file you downloaded - an .exe file or a .zip file or a .deb file?

Assuming you are running Raspabian (coz I suspect OpenPlotter has it pre-installed) you open a terminal. If you have a desktop view try Ctrl-T or Ctr-Alt-T it may launch one for you.

Then type:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:opencpn/opencpn

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install opencpn

That is probably all you need to do to install it...

Get openplotter, by far the best thing since before sliced bread  It's got Opencpn already installed and so much more, must be the most powerful one stop shop for a boat available.

So format your card, should be able to do that on a PC (assuming you have a laptop?) then follow the instructions above.

Is it a new Pi 3 B+ or the very slightly older Pi 3 B? Openplotter won't work on a B+ just yet, might have to wait a few days for the latest upgrade.

Another tutorial here> http://pysselilivet.blogspot.pt/2017/07/openplotter-quick-install-guide.html

Download openplotter from here > http://www.sailoog.com/blog-categories/openplotter-rpi

Bear in mind, you need a good power sullpy and the install can take a while, just let it get on with it.

There's a major update due imminent so you might end up starting again in hopefully not too long.

Give that a go and come back with any more questions - good luck
