Coming up the Hamble we encountered a huddle of dinghies out playing, tacking back and forth as per the norm. All was fine until one of 'em decided to tack straight in front of me. No problem coz I was prepared and had gone into neutral to let him continue his manoeuvre and be out of the way safely but instead of tacking at right angles to my bow, he continued on a collision course with my bow. I was stationary and had to reverse to avoid HIM steering into ME! (there was also one behind me so had to be very careful going astern). It was only my doing that that prevented him from sailing straight into the boat. As it was, he eventually passed right under my bow. He shouted something (I've no idea what and frankly I don't care tbh) and I'm sorry to say I had to tell him to sod off and go play somewhere else! C*CK!!!!
Why do they have to play in the fairway when they could have all the space they want out of it?!!!
Rant over.

GRRRRRR

We had a similar experience in Salcombe yesterday. Hundreds of moored craft and various dinghy races taking place through the lot. Add in the many other boats under power and it doesn't look very clever.

There does seem to be an attitude that they can do what they like. I know they have right of way etc but their activity is of no more importance than mine.

What really tops it is the paddleboarders. So precarious and vulnerable and right in the middle of it all!

we have same problem up here on the tyne , you give way to them only for them to scream abuse at you,we now just wait for a gap and speed through.one day last year we were anchored in the eastury out of everyones way there safety boat pulled up and said you will have to move because they wanted to have a race cannot repeat what i told him to do.

I know just what you mean.

Top of the Hamble today, husband and wife in an inflatable kayak, hell bent on getting across to the the Jolly Sailor, paddling away like something from the credits of Hawaii-5-0 with the woman shouting "book them Dano" at everything else afloat.

Crazy!

They like you are obliged to obey the same Colregs. So as they are the stand on vessel in a close quarters situation, they are obliged to maintain their course and speed, so if one does tack in front of you then 5 toots and a large amount of verbal seems perfectly acceptable, as does a brief burst of full throttle and the consequent wash to shake them out of the way.

Any approaching from behind you are give way vessel and should keep clear of you.

Problem is some dick head in their sailing club has probably told them power must give way to sail and little else of any sense. Time for a channel 68 complaint to the HM, after all they would be first to complain at you making excess speed or wash.

The term "power gives way to sail" is very often all they tell you at sailing school, it was one of the only things I was told and remembered, nothing about col regs ever imprinted on my mind till I did rya courses many moons ago.

Lisa I often find when encountered in that situation which is many times in the hamble that a blast on the horn works very well, maybe you should invest in a nice set of kahlbergs!!! See piers for a price.

Btw mrs vp hasn't stopped talking about your boat handling,I can see he asking me to be let loose on steel away next time you have a girlie weekend away, but ill make sure she has to fill the tanks first!! . Nice to meet you this weekend.

Wander over to Scuttlebutt and you'll find plenty there who think colregs begin and end with 'power gives way to sail'.

I find it helps to say loudly 'If you have right of way you MUST hold your course' (OK, I know it should be 'stand on' but half the numpties don't know what that means). They have the right to cross your bows but that rule means they can't immediately tack and stop you again, in other words they get one bite of the cherry.

Failing that you can always fall back on the old Merchant Navy standby - Gross Tonnage Rule.

Right of way, eh!

Well I understand that if Boats/ Yachts etc are travelling/ navigating along the 'fairway' the rules of who has 'right of way' are fairly clear. But any boat approaching them from 'off the fairway' should 'keep clear', as they are/ will be impeeding boats using the 'fairway' or if attempting to join boats in the 'fairway', so again keep clear.

Boats/ yachts/ dinghys racing should not impeed boats using the 'fairway', and so should keep clear.

Not everyone knows that!

But unfortunately that is not true

If they have to tack because they have come to the edge of the fairway then in florets terms they remain standon vessel

But that doesn't excuse this particular numpty
