Tug,

Tempting I know to say sod it, but.

Long term running without the thermostat will cause excessive carbon build up due to low cylinder temperatures and possible future engine failure?

Bite the bullet or find another source for the thermostats.

Tom

slightly confused,

how much is a thermostat for your car?
IIRC Fiat (hardly an expensive make with expensive parts) charge around 40euro...

For the extra wear and v.expensive repairs ahead, I'd fit them. Probably would remove it and go around to truck spareparts guys to find one that fits...

Have ran my v6 now for 2 years with no stat, no issues at all, engine temp when running comes up to a 1/4 on the gauge, i found out the reasion the engine was replaced before i brought the boat, thermo state completly rusted up closed could not even knock the thing out from the houseing rusted over, because i have only used the boat in summer i dont need one but winter i may need one, will c what happens.

I did lots of searching on line and seems there quite a few owners with petrol engines that dont use a stat,

Ive learnt anything v/p is a rip off, key parts have been well priced when i have wanted things

It was Keypart. And it was 39 quid odd for one(i need 2) so ill be looking at the local farmers garage instead.I should have learned by now that if you say'boat' or
'Marine' the price is instanly quadrupeled and then 50% added.

Bl**dy rip off

Volvo Parts

I too am fed up with the rip-off UK prices for Volvo parts, so my buying alternative-to-Volvo-UK experience might be of interest.

I recently needed a LH prop, the Volvo price inc carriage was an eye-watering £325. I couldn't get an after-market equivalent. I wasn't in a particular hurry but wanted it within a couple of weeks.

Aftre a quick search in Google the part number turned up in ebay from these guys in the US... www.marinepowerservice.com. I phoned them and they priced the prop (brand new) at $200 (£139!), carriage using USPS was $77 (£54). In the past I'd had a bad experience with USPS's UK shipping agent, so I arranged to have it shipped using UPS which cost £77 but was guaranteed 72hrs door-to-door. When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised to find that no VAT had been charged and also that it was under the limit for import duty.

After payment had cleared Marine Power took two days to get the part. They emailed me to say it had arrived and I emailed UPS with the collection details and the prop was delivered 3 days later, 8 days after payment. The service from Marine Power and UPS was superb, I have no connection with either of them but would thoroughly recommend them.

One phone call and a couple of emails saved £109 (33%).

Not wanting to debate this but.......

Check your rocker box for white emulsification and or water in the oil, running any engine below temp is not recommended and will increase fuel consumption. On petrol engines it normally allows condensation to form on the rocker box and consiquently water in the oil due to the low temperatures. On diesel engines it will allow carbon deposits to form.

If your happy Ok but I personally wouldnt continue to run any engine long term without a stat.

Latestarter will probably give better information on this.

No oil issue at all, zero, no white emulsification either, fuel consumption perfect for a v6, my engine starts on the first turn and does even need choke(discounected It Completly.

i would rather run the risk of my engine running cooler, than the risk of the stat not opening up because salt water has rusted the compents, alot of the stats on the market are not designed for saltwater use and have been made with inferior metals that salt water loves to eat, most stats live life happy in an enclosed loop system with antifreeze/water mixture. plus the stats will be allways open any way once the engine temp has been reached, so what the difference, other than it may take an extra 5min to warm up.

I would like to see some one run there engine for a week or two and report back with their findings, my experience is good and no issue at all.

I will be happy to debate to this, but i will say that i can only realy use my in the spring/summer period, i will agree that a stat is needed in the winter when -9 returns and the sea temp falls.

Sometimes removing the thermostat can cause and engine to overheat, not run cool. It all depends on the design. Many thermostats not only open a port to cool the engine when required but also shut off a bypass port at the same time. If you remove the thermostat then the bypass is always open and the water may not circulate through the block and head.

I would also be cautious about using cheap substitutes. When we we buying our current boat it kept overheating. This was eventually traced to a thermostat which looked similar to the Volvo Penta part but did not close the bypass completely. The engine would run at normal temperatures for at river speeds. It would even keep cool at full speed but would then overheat as soon as we slowed down.

Bl**dy rip off

Yep, just had to order a new VP circulation pump for one motor - £315 + VAT  No pattern part available either as far as I could find :(

I need to think back years to my student Mini days but I only ever had one thermostat fail.

I took it out, put it in a bowl, tipped a kettle of boiling water to fill the bowl and it was fixed.

They are a very basic design, may jam through lack of use but once unjammed it will be fine.

Take your old thermostat into any decent local motor factors and ask them to source a replacement for you.

Thermostats are standard items for engines in general and although there are still quite a few varieties there are none that are "specially made for marine use".
Although it's been quite few years since I last bought one I would be amazed if a motor factor charged you more than 10 or fifteeen quid for one.

It'll take a total of a few minutes, and there is bound to be a good factors within 5 miles radius of you.
No postage costs, no waiting, no uncertainty, no rip-off prices. :)

Without wishing to defend Volvo, I think it's maybe fair to say that a franchised motor dealers official manufacturers prices are just as outrageous as Volvo marine parts. The thing with cars is that there is an industry making alternative cheaper parts. If we had to buy from Audi, Mazda or Mercedes for every part then I am sure they would be as bad or worse than Volvo marine.
