This is a bit boaty because I ordered one of those lights to go over the chart table which have two bulbs, one plain and one red for night use, and want to fit it this weekend.

I should explain that we live on the outskirts of a village, and somebody has to drive a van to the front door to deliver the post, so it never turns up before about 11am, hence we don't get to see it until the end of the day. Not a big issue, that's part of the price we pay for living out in the sticks.

Monday - no post. Not a surprise, we often receive only junk mail on a Monday because nobody of any importance posts anything on a Saturday.
Tuesday - no post. That's a bit odd, can't recall not receiving post on two consecutive days. Never mind, tomorrow will do...
Wednesday - no post. Now hang on a minute, what's going on here?

Thursday - SWMBO phones the post office in the nearest town. Apparently our usual postie is on holiday - that's fine we all do that. The relief postie is off sick - that's fine too, we all do that from time to time too. There is nobody else to deliver the post. You what? Out of all the hundreds and thousands of people employed by the Royal Mail, nobody can bring us our post for 3 consecutive days?!

What on earth is happening at the Royal Mail? They say they have dropped the 2nd delivery to be more efficient. Our business post at the office in town arrives mid-morning, so it appears they have actually kept the 2nd delivery, and dropped the first one.

Having worked in telecomms for 28years, I have experienced the effects of de-nationalisation and deregulation, and am a full supporter of it. Its worked well in other industries too, IMO. I know everybody could quote examples of where each company has slipped up, but on the whole there has been a general improvement in cost efficiency and customer service. I don't get that impression in the postal service - its about time somebody started sorting it out. Get rid of the chuffing union's power for starters.

(I'm ignoring the railways for the time being, that's a different argument)

Rant Over - I feel a lot better now !! Oh BTW, 4 days worth of post arrived today, including my chart table light.

You think you've got problems!!! here in the bahamas if you live anywhere other than Nassau or Freeport your mail can take up to a week, even fedex overnight takes four days, for example i ordered a new set of injector pipes for my landrover from paddock's, they were posted on the 16 of this month left UK following day, still waiting for them to turn up!!!!!! the problem lies in the bahamas postal system, trouble is its exactly like the UK left it when they got independence in the 70s, jobs for life, don't give a damn, and union run..........it'll turn up some time this month..... i hope................keith

I couldn\'t disagree more..or less

Yes the Royal Mail is shite - missed deliveries, never know when theyre coming etc etc.

When the company was a nationalised industry - 1st class post arrived next - always. Sometimes 2nd calls did too!!. There was always a post in the morning and one at mid-day.

The problem is not the union. Full stop. It's this bloody headlong rush towards everything being a profit centre - knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Rant just beginning!!

Sorry for you but generally ....

The post service is good in UK - IMHO.

Here in Baltic's ..... anything heavier or bigger than a feather often gets a ticket in the mailbox requiring pick-up from the sorting office. They do not deliver to the door - only to a stack of tim mailboxs on a wall. It takes days to get 200 kms up the road unless you pay 4x the price for express and then it often gets returned as receiver not found .....

The good 'ol USA ....... blimey that is a step back in time ---- Pony Express was the only time mail actually got across the states in good time ..... now it takes anything from 4 - 10 days to get east to werst coast .... how do I know - my bruv lives there and has no end of trouble with it ....

I know we all rant and rave sometimes about Telephone / Postal Service in UK - but generally it is better than many other places I've been.

OK - I have a rant after all ...

Parcel delivery service leaves ticket for collection of parcel at Waterlooville Parcel Office. Fine - get in car and drive to the office ..... now here is where it gets interesting ..... Nowhere to put the car unless you fancy a fine in the Swimming POol Car Park or a very VERY long walk from nearest public CP.

Now the problem is ...... you are also not the ONLY one who is trying to get their parcel ...... join the queue.

It is a Traffic Wardens Paradise - as eventually you give up and park on the yellow lines ..... ZAP - KAPOW ! Got yer ! BUt MR.Warden - where CAN I park ...... Not my problem sir - take this little ticket to ........

I think a little thought about customer provision wouldn't go amiss ??
