I have started to have problems with new sanding discs flying off my Random Orbital Sander like some Roman Weapon. I bought some Piranha 80 grit sanding discs (the one I always get - I think) and they don't seem to adhere anymore. On inspection the velcro pad on the sander is a bit "fluffed" up, but not a great deal. I would suspsect that Piranha have changed their backing material on their discs? Or do I need to change the velcro back - but it seems OK? Or am I being a dimwit and missing something here?

Hi, I had that prob so I replaced hooks with new stick on strips of hooks a long time ago. my discs started to fly off again but new ones were ok. the prob appears to be the fluffy face losing the loops especially when puting extra pressure on the sander. I bought a load of discs from fixit and they are behaving fine. I also keep the pressure down now. Takes a bit longer but less agro.

i had the same problem with my black & decker it was the base plate I changed it was good as new again, so it looks like you need a new base. I tried the wire brush but to no avail, you need to look for her in doors purse?????

Thanks for your help. I have looked online - dead right they are not cheap. I am wondering whether its worth going for an Argos cheapo just to finish the job!

After running a woodworking busines for 18 yrs I am faminliar with the glue trick ( try the gelled contact adhesive) The main problem most users have with orbitals is applying too much pressure. and also trying to concentrate on a sall spot by tilting the sander and use one edge. You will ruin the base and go thru sanding disks too quickly - save the disks you change and use them for hand sanding the small spots and you'll be pounds ahead

You don't need to replace the whole expensive backing pad - you can buy new generic stick on pads that just go onto the existing backing pad (after cleaning off as much of the old hook and loop as possible with a scraper). About £7 for a pack of two new pads. Mine has lasted 6 months and fairing a hull since I put it on. I also used the spray-on glue method before I got the new pad and used Ados F2 contact adhesive spray-on glue. I did find that after about 10 discs it got harder and harder to get them to stick well and hence found the new stick on pad.
