George Collins & his Twin Brother Billy were celebrating their 80th Birthdays yesterday.
George was @ Ramsholt as usuall & Billy doing his "Little Gardening job".
George & his Wife Susan celebrate their Golden Wedding later this year

I went down with my son to see George, and Bill, about six weeks back as my son has just got a mooring near mine. We were made very welcome in the newish office which was nice and warm on a freezing cold day.

They told us how the previous week when the snow fell it had been impossible to drive down the slope to the Ramsholt, and they parked at the top and had to walk the last bit. Next day they dug a track out so they could drive down again. Not bad at 80.

Isn't it amazing that they have spent so much time near/on the water yet they have never learnt to swim. Hence the reason why they never go in a dinghy without a life jacket.

It's more common than you think.

I know a naval officer who can't swim either. When I commented upon it, his reply: 'pilots can fly either'.

Didn't know if that were possible; couldn't have become a Leading Hand in 1949, without being able to swim.

There is learning to swim and passing the RN swimming / fitness test!

I had to have 2 goes to pass my fitness test back in the early 80s (well I had just had 3 years at Uni!) and along with all the other rescrubs we had to time each other / count the number of repetitions etc. Amazing how bad we were at counting 1, 2, 5, 9, 13, 22 etc!

I always worked on the philosophy that push come to shove in the places where we exercised and were likely to have conflicts, with the ship sinking about me if I cannot step into the liferaft it'll probably be too bloomin cold to be worth getting into the water to swim to it.

Our swimming test in '49 was 50 yards in a white canvas duck suit, taken in a Leeds swimming bath, from HMS Ceres, Wetherby - did it get easier?

No duck suit! The swimming test became part of an overall fitness test when I took it in '83. The swimming bit was easy 50 yards in AWD then tread water for a couple of minutes. What killed me was the 1.5 mile run and climbing a rope
