Just a bit of planning for next year, June probably; timing can be quite flexible. What’s the best time ie time before/after
Hw, to leave Ramsgate in order to get to Eastbourne? I’ve done the journey the other way, but I was surprised when I started to look at how much tide I would be pushing. I’m working on a speed of 5kts. I have a feeling that I may have to split the journey over 2 days and have a night in Dover, as we prefer not to have to do too much in any one day.

I don't think you can actually do it without having the tide against you at some point.

Start at Dover and leave with the knockings of the falling (north) tide and with a fair wind you may just be able to make the node point (somewhere between Dungeness and Royal Sovereign before it changes. But you have to get onto the waiting pontoon at Dover which may not be easy .. Remember they are doing lots of work for the new docks and changes to the Marina. (which will of course silt up as they have not thought to make sure there is a through flow).

You can't carry the tide going west, so the main point is to avoid bucking the tide where it runs strongest, off Dover and Dungeness. It isn't hard to get past Dungeness from Dover but you may not be free to head inshore immediately if there is firing going on. Pot markers might be another disincentive.

Wot e sed. I would (I do) break it at Dover.

And the pot markers are a particular disincentive to doing it at night.
