Ramsgate, nice beer.

We really enjoy Ramsgate! Never quite sure why folk beef about it so much.
Try La Magnolia for excellent Italian food and wine, their daily specials are really good and it's just a few paces away from the Royal Temple YC. Very welcoming, nice leather chairs and they used to do a good sunday lunch in the past. Both these overlook the harbour, head for the green neon strip...you'll see what I mean. Very good ice creams near the fish and chip shop, both near the old casino, turn right along the back of the marina, past the shipyard, they are on the left. Also a fair breakfast under the arches overlooking the marina, the Ship locker or somesuch name. Don't ask for scrambled eggs though.
Downside, the showers are usually s---e. Constant grumbling from boat owners and staff result in inadequate repairs by the council.

Has Ramsgate got anything else going for it - I'm thinking of stopping off there when taking my newly acquired yacht from the Orwell to Portsmouth.

Ramsgate is an excellent stop off on that route - I have been there many times. I have found the people to be extremely helpful and nice. The yacht club is also worth a visit and the town has a certain charm to it...

Enjoy the local beer too!

Ramsgate one of my favourite harbours - just beats my second favourite, Dartmouth, but that's only because its nearer.

Great harbour side bars and the excellent and grungy Foy boat for the end of a long evening. Bon Appetit is such a favourite for great local food cooked in a French style that we even went down for New Years eve. One good and one stunning Thai, and a lot more places to eat if you walk along the beach at low tide to Broadstairs.

I also like the Georgian architecture and the supermarket hidden one street back from the Marina. It also has the best B and B I've come across anywhere - the Royal Harbour. Takes friendliness and quirkiness to a new level.

Sailing wise, it's a bit challenging with fast tides, moving sandbanks and the Goodwins. The only downside of my year based there was only harbour nearby for a short hop is Dover.

Ramsgate

Hi everyone.

Live in Broadstairs - boat at Ramsgate. generally the town is very nice, good yacht club and other local hostelries.

If you are passing through - pm me and we could meet for a beer.

cheers

David

Belgian Bar near casino well worth a visit - if you don't have anything important to do for a day or two afterwards = like sail a boat back to Ipswich :D

Personally I try to make Dover when heading south and west and stop at Ramsgate when heading back home.

Breakfast in the arches overlooking the Marina, Belgian Cafe, RTYC, and a beautiful walk along the cliff top to broadstairs....perfick! Oh and there is a Waitrose in town :)

The Churchill is OK, Broadside on draught led to an interesting evening! Also have live music sometimes OK sometimes dire(I am a metal fan so my taste may be questionable in this respect)

Spent four pleasant nights in Ramsgate last summer whilst waiting for fair winds to take us elsewhere. The saving grace was bringing a couple of folding pushbikes which allows one to get out of the dreary town centre. TBH, Thanet hasn't got too much going for it, but there are some good places to keep you entertained for a few days if you can travel a little further.

Broadstairs is great. Some good pubs and the festival's good fun -- decent beer:-)

Manston's Spitfire Museum is a good visit.

Margate is a hole worse than Ramsgate. Note that the Turner Modern Gallery doesn't actually have any Turner paintings! IMHO a bunch of pretentious modernist nonsense. Good for a laugh.

Sandwich is nice. Further inland is Canterbury by train (or pushbike).

Hmm, I'm not saying much that's nice about Ramsgate though.
