I reckon I need to clean and repaint both my engines this winter, the former owner did not take a lot of care of them externally but thankfully was diligent in servicing thank goodness.

So I wondered where is the best/cheapest place to buy Volvo green engine paint, or perhaps the RAL number. Any other tips appreciated!

many thanks.

I had direct adhesion paint made up in the right colour. I just took a bit of engine in and they matched it. I had grey made for the engine bearers too.

Its a two part so you have to mix it with a degree of accuracy, but it will go onto the old paint or onto bare metal. Even aluminium.

Can be sprayed or brushed, just differnet mix ratios.

Any automotive paint supplier should be able to do it. If not, call me.

Not sure "cheap" and " volvo green paint" really fit together in the same sentence.

I smartened one up for a friend some years ago. I used a can of Hammerite that I had going spare.

TK paint do a base coat and a gloss in aerosol cost effectivena dthe colour is Volvo Penta not expensive other wise if you ant to spray it get it colour macthed but under coat and Gloss.

Thanks for the prompt response guys, I will make some enquiries. Lots of little jobs to do but I really want to clean up the engines/engine bay before I thoroughly clean the bilges. I don't mind paying for good quality materials but VP mark-ups seem to take the biscuit!

The Volvo paint is about £40 per litre inc vat, it covers well and drys quickly and is far better than any other paints I have used, the aerosols are about £30 inc vat, you can spray a part and fit a few minutes later, far better than the Keypart one that is £10 less that you need twice as much to cover.

The TK aerosols from memory are about £8 or 9 ex vat

Base coat 40.090 antirust fosfozinc verde0406

Top coat 40.085 Volvo Penta Green 0116

They also do a good clear and coloured outdrive antifouling aerosols

We do engine repaints as well as touch ups with them fast drying and easy to use.

Its made in Italy so should be available in the MED.

VICS:
I saw your old post on Hammerite and I must say that I am very tempted to use it, I have before and will probably go Hammerite on Galv for the engine rails.

Elessar:
I also like Mark's idea of using direct adhesion paint mixed to match.

Aquapower:
With regard to Volvo Paint, I have no doubt that it is good stuff, I used it before on my Targa 34 engines but I just find their mark-up for the Volvo badge a bit excessive, certainly for paint. I suppose its simply a case of why kill yourself selling more for less when you can simply sell less for more!

Bandit:
Thanks for the product numbers, I will take a look at them, leaning that way at the moment.

Thanks for your time guys.

John, personally I wouldn't use hammerite on the bearers or any parts. The paint is fine but it doesn't half shout "diy bodgery" and "rust cover up" when you come to sell the boat. It's the very opposite of OEM. All imho tho :-)

JFM:
That's interesting John; there's no rust on the galvanised rails but I take on board your point. I like white rails, indeed white everywhere if I had my way, it shows up minor leaks, better reflects what light is introduced in the engine bay and you feel obliged to keep it clean. Looks like I need to ponder this further, goodness knows how I would get on building my own boat.....;-)
