Hi,

Does a raython radome go with the lastest Raymarine C Series display (i.e. are they compatible)? Also have heard news that the C Series is about to be upgraded to include items such as AIS capabilities etc. Does anyone know if this will be available on a software upgrade or is it hardware?

Many thanks,
Scott

Backwards compatibility...

C-series has limited compatibility with older radomes. Won't work with anything built before Dec 2002 (serial numbers before 1220001). Radomes built after then and before May 2003 need modifying for C-series.

I'd imagine the new AIS & Navtex input features will be software controlled, but you'd need to ask Raymarine to be certain.

Re: Radome & Raymarine C Series - also new C Series capabilities!

What on earth are you talking about?

Firstly a radome is a radome and has nothing to with ray-who-ever-owns-the-company-today-today-marine.

If you were stupid enough to lock yourself into a modified NMEA 0183 system (RS 232 International Data Bus - with the first letter of the data sentence changed - just to completely B#gg@r you up - then God help you! - because ray-whatever-they-are calling-themselves-today-won't)

Re: Hmmm...

At least it gives you an good insight into the world of Raymarine and the way they treat employees/contractors and ultimately customers.

Raymarine is just not (easily) compatible with non-Raymarine stuff. Hell, try to get 2 Raymarine toys - one new, one 5 years old - to work together...

I have, and always, will stick to Furuno/Icom/B&G and even NASA. Their stuff works well with anything.
As to customer service: I have yet to find out how good/bad Furuno/Icom/B&G and NASA customer service is. Their stuff just works - never needed to find out.

Good insight?...

[/ QUOTE ] I'm not sure it gives us any insight! Looks like a fairly "unusual" guy - look at a few of his other posts.

As manufacturers have embraced newer technologies, it's inevitable that backwards compatibility sometimes suffers. Raymarine is by no means alone in this. As far as customer service goes, take a look at the Raymarine website for a great example of aftersales support (and compare it with the NASA website!).

As I said before - never needed to find out.
On Yanita we had a NASA Clipper Duet and GPS repeater. No whistles or bells. Just cheap and cheerful, AND it ALWAYS worked. Like the advert: it does what it says on the box.

Response to Brian:
Nice to have such a polite responce. Thanks for your input, although I won't be taking any notice of it. I like your other inputs on this site. You're certainly always to the point. If you don't like giving advice i suggest you use another site.

Re: Good insight?...

Thank you to everybody so far for posting. Its nice to have some friendly advice from most. Once again thanks so far.

Re: Good insight?...

AIS is a software upgrade and the radomes have not changed for a while, which one do you have?

Re: Good insight?...

Hi, I haven't actually got a radome yet, but a raytheon (P/N is M92650) has come up for sale.

Glad to hear about the AIS, hopefully they'll release a software upgrade soon.

Many thanks,
Scott
