Where dose the loud interference come from that some times drowns out 16 making it imposible to send or receive untill it has finnished.
And why after hearing the coast guards (Very loud and clear) anounce a weather forcast on 16 and telling you to go to 10 or what ever.
Is it so faint some times that you can't hear a thing.
I dont seem to have a radio problem. Well I dont think so anyway and it has a big speaker just above my head.
Well theres my two pence worth of sensible question for the week!!

Yeh I've often wondered that.

I think the loud noise on CH16 sometimes, is some clot who has something resting on the Tx button on mic or whatever. Often hear coast guard say, All stations check your transmitters, we have a carrier on Ch16. Wot puzzles me is, if you are transmitting, how you going to hear the message??

Regarding weather info., I reckon CG have a different, maybe higher gain, ariel for Ch16, to that used on 10, 67, 73 or whatever.

How's that for two pennith sensible answer!

Replace your radio with a newer decent one. You can buy good ones in the US for not a lot of money.

I was about to say that. Have you noticed how cheesed off(polite when Kim's around!) CG are getting at spurious MMMMMSSSSIIIII (or whatever they're called) transmissions they are getting. It seems easy to press the wrong 1 of 200 buttons on DSC set. Then it's Merde!Too late, got to govel to CG. Also seems possible to send out a distress when you think set is switced off.

I was in the Solent about three weeks back minding my own business when we a) wound up rescuing a broken down outboard-powered runabout in Langstone Harbour b) then answered a coastguard call for any vessels in the area to assist a sportsboat out of fuel on the East Winner and towed that back in also and c) spend most of the afternoon listening to the coastguard trying to track down a DSC Mayday from a boat with no MMSI. Struck me as being a bit silly that a radio can even make a DSC Mayday without an MMSI - would have thought it would be possible to prevent that within the software.

You are right to suggest there are problems brewing with the new system I think.

wdn't have thort so. The have radios in the med and even hotter places. Hlb's boat is freezing, at least on the flybridge, unles he has a high-temperature compost heap, inwhich case praps too much nitrogen?

These channels come from different places don't they? So the ch16 is from nearby, and weather forecast ch10 is praps another bloke from miles away.

Ummmm, yes, sorry, should of course be kewwell. Fortunately, any suggestion to niece that she should use precious internet time looking at a boating forum would make me distinctly un-kewwell so my secret is safe.

Lapsing slightly into the club bar/old fish wife's rumour school with this but I think all electronics should be kept as cool as possible; in particular have seen some strange performances from gear fitted right on top of the dashboards of wheelhouse/saloon boats under the windscreen where they quite happily heat up to a temperature capable of frying eggs, even in Britain on overcast days. Manuals usually come with spec tables showing safe operating temperatures - haven't got any to hand here but might make interesting reading.

Another one to look out for are LCD screen instruments fitted on flybridges and sportscruiser helms, especially in the Med. Some of them, esp. older examples, last about five minutes before blacking out in the sun. It's not helped by the fact that most builders place instruments on the horizontal, rather than inclining them towards the vertical.

Cheers Haydn...save for the fact that my previous job gave me an excuse to play with a lot of installations on other peoples' boats and I did see some examples where high temperatures played a part in excess interference. Should have made it clearer that it's not necessarily the case in the fault you are reporting although if other boats around you are not getting the same problem then I would try running the radio on its own with everything else aboard turned off (including shorepower, fridge, all other electronics) and see if it still occurs.

Also be warned, have come across cases on more than one occasion where a neighbouring boat was generating so much interference that it blitzed the VHF's for 2-3 boats either side. Is this happening in the marina or whilst on the high seas as well?

I'm beginning to understand these MBM cruises. You stay here and try haydn's radio. Meanwhile we'll be in the pub running test transmissions on a portable...
