I called coastguard on 16 from Cardiff bay to report safe arrival - went up from 16 to 67 - I could hear them, but they were not hearing me. It had worked OK that morning in mid- Bristol channel and it worked when back in Burnham.
Any of you had a similar experience ?

Yeah it is rubbish in the bay....i always call them a mile or two out.
On the odd time i forgot the barrage have done a relay call for me.

Rarely use the vhf in the bay except to call the barrage lock control so cant really say but a few weeks back I was sat in the River Axe and had no trouble speaking to Alcyone who was on their mooring at Cardiff YC at the time.

Maybe it deteriorates if your close to the barrage itself.

I've had problems with reception in the bay, sometimes can't hear the CG weather broadcasts at all - othertimes crystal clear, or various levels of crackle between the two extremes. All from exactly the same spot on my mooring.
Had been worried about the reliability of my VHF as the signal strength doesn't seem to vary with the weather or battery state or anything else I can think of - its random.
Perhaps I've no need to worry then, if others are having issues.

Yes, same here. Most of the time, fine, but, on occasion, I'v eheard the start of the weather broadcast, suggesting a change to channel 23, and then nothing. It's rare, but I've heard it.

Graham is right though, I heard him clear from weston the other week, I could plainly hear the bottles clinking in the background.

It can be hit and miss in the Bay area. Some days its ok and other days it can be hit and miss (Reception and Transmission). Last time we launched we could hear Swansea MCC ok but had problems talking to them. Speaking with an ex CG officer, the transmitter/Receiver is out of sight when near the barrage/penarth area hence there is a black spot here. I've found CYC moorings to be ok.

Cheers
