Radio receiver on board for listening to UK radio abroad

Does anyone use Satellite radio. Offshore
It's quite popular here for cars. Though I don't have it myself.
Sad to hear the BBC has reduced service so much. I suppose the world moves on.

If you want the BBC to think that you are in the UK and not in Greece then you need a program that will fool the BBC! This is a VPN program I use Tunnelbear.
Tunnelbear.JPG

It is from Canada and essentially software to promote privacy. They do not store any information on the sites that you connect to. They explain it all nicely here https://www.tunnelbear.com/why-vpn Their graphics are great.
If you only listen to the radio then the free version should be enough 500mb/month. If you want to watch TV you will probably exceed 500Mb/month

SWMBO loved it when we watched WImbledon while abroad.

I don't know about Tunnelbear, but I've just tried a couple of the free Chrome plugins and the Beeb (iPlayer) are wise to them.

I have Mobdro TV and Giniko TV on my Android tablet which both use an integrated VPN so access UK TV from overseas. Sometimes the UK TV companies catch up with one and it doesn't work for an hour or two until they change their settings but the other one always seems to be working OK when that happens so I've never not been able to see what I want to see whilst on the boat on Croatia.

Friends in Greece had a satellite radio and used it extensively. This would have been nearly 10 years ago. Impressed with it we bought a set on Ebay but even then few stations were being broadcast. Within a year there were none.

A podcast app makes that easy, plus checks for new episodes to download or listen live.

You can do that with iplayer radio but I prefer not to delegate downloads to apps which seem to serve their own ends rather than mine.

I've used Tunnelbear with mixed results. If you tweet how good it is you get an extra 1Gb / month. I find Turbo VPN a more reliable VPN.
I'm currently in Spain and can download iplayer radio without VPN using mobile data but not using Wifi, with or without VPN. It seems to vary with which carrier is being used.

If you are roaming with a UK mobile provider then your IP is likely to be seen as coming from the Voda/Three/etc. network in the UK.
On WiFi, the geo location of your IP address will be that of the Spanish ISP.

With podcast player you can have it all in one place, podcasts from all of the the web, not just the Beeb. I use https://gpodder.net/ which keeps the subscriptions in sync between android, raspberry pi & laptop.

Not sure what app downloads you're talking about... What apps are the culprits and what are they downloading?

I use the iplayer radio app as well on android, no need for a VPN. In Portugal anyway..

As a R4 addict when sailing in N/S Brittany I use LW, but really get hacked off when it goes over to cricket.

I too listen to R4 LW as far South as I can get it - ESPECIALLY the cricket.......

I also need a new LW receiver as my old Sony ICS SW 100 is literally falling apart and they don’t make ‘em any more sadly.

Chris if you have an iPhone or iPad do load the bbc iPlayer Radio. It is an app for bbc radio services and not only does it stream live programmes by it also has a catch-up facility allowing you to listen to any missed programme from the previous week. You can even set it to download some automatically. In addition it has the wonderful BBC4extra where you can listen to classic comedies but also some fantastic dramas(Rogue Male is particularly good).

The other thing you can do is download podcasts, so on my iPhone I have about 500 episodes of Alistar Cook’s letter from America. I then play these through the cockpit speakers... bliss.
