I need to know the radio callsign of my boat but I can't find any record of it at home, all the documents showing it are on the boat 70 miles away. Is there a public database I can access to find it?
Try to find a mnemonic that works for you - mine's easy by making a mental picture out of the phonetic alphabet
"Me dancing to a local hostelry for a certain number of alchoholic beverages"
(hope I didn't give too much away there for anyone wanting to use my callsign)

You'll probably find it here on the ITU website.
[/ QUOTE ]Which is one of my objections to the public access of the site.
Scenario:
Scrote walks round the marina, spys a boat checks the web site, goes to marina office (in sailing gear complete with kit bag for effect) and says "I was to meet Mr XXXXXX, owner of YYYYYY but he is not here, do you have a phone number for him?" "Dumbo" in marina office gives the scrote your phone number (I know they shouldn't but shit happens), scrote looks up telephone directory, has your address (assuming you are not ex-directory, but even that can be got round thanks to the 'net), watches for your boat leaving said marina at the weekend, calls house, no answer, you come back to empty house.
Likewise the CG66 scheme. Do they really think I trust their security? Ooooh, this guy owns this boat moored here and lives at this address - No chance. What is the benefit? - white topsides (99% of other boats the same) White sails (maybe 95% of other sail boats) light grey decks (90% of other sail boats?) WTF is the point? Radio distress procedure covers the life raft, persons on board etc.

I was about to ask why I should bother to learn it when I have never had anyone call me using it but, as I don't know what it is, I wouldn't know whether they had or not. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I only recently realised that if I read my call sign as though it was a word, it is pronounced exactly as a proper word - it ends in 8 (-ate). The word is even loosely connected to my former profession. There can't be very many like this.

So no one wants to discuss - rather bury your heads in the sand...........
(hope you are well insured)
Just realised - maybe everyone has me on ignore!)

If I say yes, then you will move on to the next letter. If I say no then 25 forumites will suggest the other letters of the alphabet until the right one is 'guessed'. I'm trying to remain anonymous so I may regret making my post. As has been mentioned, someone may find out when I am away sailing, break into my house and steal my SWMBO. On second thoughts ....... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Right, the plot thickens. To preserve your anonymity, would I be right in thinking the first letter of your callsign is the same as the first letter of your surname?
