For those of you who get the Shipping Forecast on the radio on LW, I was suprised at the quality of the sound and reception of the Portable Radio which I bought for £6.95 from Tesco. Has it been made by Roberts and cost £50 I would not have been disappointed.
And dont forget on Long Wave on Radio Atlantic (Irish) you can also get the Irish Shipping Forecast an hour earlier. Although perhaps not a lot of use if your going to Cherbourg however useful if your in the Irish Sea.

Yes. I bought one this morning but the price was £2 lower than the link says. It's mono only, quite tinny for music but perfectly OK for voice. AM doesn't seem to pick up very much, haven't managed to find either of the 5Live frequencies yet, but good on LW and OK for Radio 2 on FM.

Brilliant !

Got one today.

All stations seem to work fine.

198LW for shipping and cricket does it for me though. I expect the batteries will cost more than the radio.

As an aside. I found the Roberts radio/record very disappointing. It rusted up after a few seasons. Perhaps leaving it on the boat over winter is not a good idea.

Thanks again for the tip.

C'mon Vyv it makes it quite clear that it's a KITCHEN radio!!!!

Interesting you mention that. Just the other day I was tempted to buy a similar one at BOYES for something around 5 quid. Decided not to since my Sangean's more than adequate for LW reception and how many backups does one really need. Thought it might be rubbish too at that price. Next to it they were selling a tape recorder "ideal for voice recordings or storing computer data". Like manic miner or what?

I bought a similar but cheaper radio from Tesco last year, it uses D cells and is still on it's second set of batteries. I use it most of the time on the boat, only problem is it's a bit quiet so I have to hold it to my ear if the donkey is on. Apart from that its great, I keep meaning to install a car radio but as this works fine haven't got around to it, also never quite sure if a modern car radio has LW.

The recommendations here are very useful - I shall endeavour to lay my hands on one of these.

I bought a previous seven quid Tesco radio for Jumblie, and it's complete and utter rubbish. Even if you can tune it the tuning wanders all over the place. It's not even heavy enough to make a decent paperweight and it's too thick to prop up a wobbly table.

I have just bought one at the local Tesco. It gets the long wave 198Khz programme very well and the sound quality is more than adequate but -.

The Image and IF rejection are pretty pathetic.

At both ends of the long wave there is very strong breakthrough.
The front end of the receiver seems not to be very selective and is quite open to out of band signals.
This makes me think that the reception will drop quite dramatically in the presence of a powerful local transmission.

It has obviously been made down to a price.

I may be wrong in my thoughts but time will tell.

I am still quite happy with the performance for the price, but like in most things you get what you pay for.

Landlubber. Kitchens on boats are called Galleys.

We call ours the kitchen, nothing bad has happened to us yet for doing that.

We have bedrooms, a toilet and ropes too... Is it important to call things by their correct names?
