my vhf aerial is mounted on the end of one of those plastic stand-offs.- you know, the6 inch long plastic "beam" rivetted to the top of the mast at one end and with the aerial threading through a hole at the other.

I want to mount the aerial directly into a hole in the ally plate at the top of the mast and use the stand off for my windex.

question - will mounting the aerial directly into ally harm the functioning. personally I cant see why it should but if thats the case why are they usually mounted in these plastic stand offs anyway?

No problem, the aerial function will not be impaired.
Aerial brackets are often aluminium or stainless.
