Radiator Reflector Foil as an underlay to headliner?

Hi,

I've come across a roll of radiator reflector foil 2mm x 470mm x 4m (metallised polyester and polyethylene foam) .. closed cell?

What i want to know is if I could use the above as an underlay underneath a foam backed vinyl, or carpet headliner.

I just want to give the headliner a smoother finish by putting the radiator reflector foil up first, as this should reduce the amount of visible undulations from the grp.

The radiator reflector foil is incredibly cheap at only £5.99 per roll (which is why I would like to use it), lightweight and should be very easy to place.

Might also use it on the walls, again underneath foam backed vinyl or carpet headliner.

Can anyone see a problem with this?

Thanks,
Indy

Hi DavidJ,

Many thanks for your reply.

My boat is a SeaRay Sundancer 1992 29.2m which does not provide much in the way of headroom, which is why I do not want to use flat board to remove the anticlastic surfaces, as moving through the cabin on my knees was not an option I really wanted to go with lol.

I had watched a Youtube video by a company called Sailrite who talked you through fixing foam backed vinyl & carpet headliner directly to the GRP, however you could still see the undulations to some degree, which was why I was asking if using 2mm radiator reflector foil would work.

I know there are other waterproof closed cell insulation sheets out there but they are mega expensive, so when I found this stuff at such a good price I just wanted to know if it would be an acceptable alternative?

Regards,
Indy

Hi peeps,

150 people have now viewed this thread with only DavidJ (Much obliged) responding.

Is there nobody else out there who can answer my question ... please

Question:
Would radiator reflector foil 2mm (metallised polyester and polyethylene foam ... closed cell foam) be an acceptable alternative to use as an underlay prior to adding foam-backed vinyl or carpet headliner.

The radiator reflector foil is cheaper and thinner, but looks to be made of the same materials as the more expensive specialised boat underlay sheets (Owning a boat is expensive as we all know, so any way to save money is important)

I want to use it as an extra form of packing, to reduce the undulations in the GRP showing through the final headliner, so would using 2mm radiator reflective foil be detrimental in any way?

Cheers,
Indy
