I am thinking now of getting a radar.

The question is where to mount it.

Due to various issues etc it will not be going up the mast.

So either it will be a pole on the stern or on a pole linked to the Backstay

I am looking at either pole mount or back stay

Cheeky has a single backstay fixed to a steel plate can I use this to attach the backstay mounted style

It may depend on how your boat is structured. I had a pole fitted at fairly short notice and hadn’t given it much thought. It is a s/s pole fixed to a step on the stern. It was stabilised by a short bar to the pushpit but a weld broke after a few years. I have now had it supplemented with two braces down to deck level and it is much steadier. Basically, you will either need a sturdy pole or one with adequate support laterally.

My arrangement is not quite as I remembered it, with just a strap across to the pushpit and an adjustable long tie to the pulpit rail. A single base fitting can work if there is sufficient space for a strong fixing.

I went the pole route too and looked at making my own in alloy tubing, having a fabricator make something up in stainless but in the end bought a Scanstrut pole.

Yes expensive but very well made, I liked the easy wiring channels, included stabiliser and the adjustable foot which allows easy orientation and also to swing it down to get at the radome if you need to.

As my old Mum used to say "the quality is remembered long after the price is forgot"
