Radar training course anyone interested

Decided to have a trawl around the MoD intranet at work and found the Royal Navy's Plymouth site who do service training and tri service sailing courses to RYA certs.

They listed a radar course fro yachts. I called them and the guy denied that they ran this course, but it is on the intranet site says I. He says well we would but have no takers if you have a few mates interested we could put one on I am sure.

Looking at last years prices the two day course is £40.00 for non service or dependants, but I have not actually discussed money with him yet so it may be different for a one off course. I didn't even ask how many mates he meant, but I would presume 10 to 12 would be a good class, but I would have to confirm this.
It may be weekdays too.

Day one is classroom and simulator based, day two is on the water. This course will cover the RYA syllabus. Accomodation at the base may be a possibility, but I am not sure if that was just to me, perks of my trade possibly.

So, is anyone interested pending further information, I have given everything I know right now, so some things might not be trully accurate until I can go back to him with a definate booking.

I really fancy this, and it could be a nice way for a few of us to meet up.

Count me in on that. I currently have a large box sitting in the hall, result of LIBS, and it would be nice to know how to use it. I will need some sort of accomodation but either Pusser's or B & B will suit me. I wait to hear from you.

Jools,
I've no wish to pour cold water on your plans but, knowing the cost of a tank of petrol for your car, even if the course were free and the B&B price nominal it would be cheaper for you to go to Hoylake for the course.

I will call on Monday when I get back into work. The numbers obviously not a problem.

I will for fairness if numbers are more limited do it in order of requests on here, not forgetting a request by PM.

I will get as much detail as possible and post back.

As for accomodation, that will be something for you all to organise, I will ask about staying on base, but like I said in my first posting I don't know if that offer was just to service / civil service peoples, I will clarify that point with him.

Went on a day's course last year at HMS Dryad (spelling?) near Portsmouth, using the Navy's simulator facilities. It was excellent. Worth every penny. Quite excellent.

One more for HMS Troutbridge

Subject to time, place and cost. Could always park Indigo at Gosport for a day or two which would provide somewhere for three stout men to sleep (or four slim ones)

I often see adverts for "radar courses" and am baffled as to why they are necessary. What do they teach you? I have radar on my boat and it is a doddle to use.

It\'s a truism

I know.

But none of us know what we don't know (you can't guage the extent of ignorance until we know the subject)
Having had the benefit of some military training in radar use I can assure you that a well-trained operator can infer things from signal shape as well as tune and plot - that your average yachtie would consider to be magic.

And RN training is 2nd to none
