anybody had the cover off whilst dangling from the bosuns chair? my scanner sounds like a coffee grinder so there's clearly a mechanical problem . the tech help at simrad seem to think its probably just something come lose but I'm a bit nervous at the idea oif taking it to bits aloft. but having just put the mast up, I'm not taking it down again.

what's inside my scanner - in plain english !

I'm no engineer, but I have seen inside a couple of scanners including my own Raymarine 2kW scanner.
Basically it consists of a round plastic case covering a load of clever electronics, and an electric motor turning a vertical aluminium plate (waveguide) via a rubber belt. If it's making a noise it might be the motor or gearbox.

If you just want to look inside...

The plasic cover on the scanner will be held on with some screws. You biggest job will be accessing and removing the cover without dropping it or the screws in the "oggin".

Do not switch on the radar with your head or any other part of you anatomy near the waveguide !!

My Raymarine 2kw dome has a piece of string attaching the dome cover to the base. Saves dropping the cover in the drink when aloft. Perhaps Raymarine have been doing this sort of thing for a while

I'm told the Simrad radar in my boat also has a string. maybe thats whats caught up in the mechanism

I have a Furuno, which comes down when it needs its annual repair!!

But as the post reported there is a bit of string and as clip to keep the cover suspended without a problem.

The screws dont come out as they are retained with washers.

I have once put the drive belt back on when up the mast.

Re your grinding problem, can only think its a bearing. When the drive belt is off the antenna revolves with so little effort.

My only experience is with the Furuno, who drive belt keeps coming off!
