my radar has broken down and I would like to investigate the possibility and cost of repair before deciding what to do. Its a simrad anritsu unit of 95 vintage.

Any recommendations of repair shops?

Not so much a recommendation but just a point.

I was told on my radar course that the magnetron in the scanner has a finite life span. For a "normal" yacht radar 10 to 15 years of "normal" use. This also includes time on standby as the magnetron is warmed up in standby which causes the wear.

If it was working fine then suddenly died then it's not the magnetron so might be repairable but if it's slowly faded then magnetron is dead which basically means a new scanner.

Even if it is repairable, are you sure you want to chuck a couple of hundred pounds at it? It must be nearing the end of it's life span anyway. Might be better chucking the money into a new one???
