I recently purchased a used boat that came equipped with a Lowrance 3G radar. Since the majority, if not all of my cruising will be on inland waterways, I’m considering removing the radar, as it limits my clearance under bridges.

Ideally, I’d like to leave the existing cables in the roof in case I decide to reinstall the radar in the future, but I’m unsure if that’s feasible. I’ll also need to cover the resulting hole in a way that keeps it watertight.

Has anyone done something similar who can advise on the following?

  1. Is there a connector at the radar unit that can be unplugged and left in the roof space?
  2. What’s the best way to seal or blank the hole—are there specific blanking plates available for this purpose?

For context, the roof is not flat, and the radar is mounted on what appears to be a Scanstrut-style mount.

If you decide to sell the radar, please let me know.

Use the base of the mount to create a template then get a piece of white acrylic cut. Use same hole to fix, bead of decent sealant around. Should be a simple job.
Great idea. I've ordered some white acrylic and rubber sheet to make a seal, just in case I decide to reattach it someday or repurpose the holes for a solar panel.
