Took off the radome yesteday and found sand sea water and quite a bit of corrosion
Off it went to raymarine for a fix only thing that puzzles me is how did the sand get in there ???
Only thing I could come up with (my eldest son actually)was that when we were in the med the boat got covered a few times by the sand storms coming over from africa there was a 2 inch crack in the cover and a gap about half a millimetre
What else could have caused the sand to get in there ????

dang is it knackered?

A record quantity of red sand fell the year before you were there, i believe where in one day thee was 50grams of red sand per square metre. So yep, definitely (if it's red) it's from the rain.

Go on, buy a new open array colour radar, you know it makes sense... you can here the pull of it from the shop...

/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif but you are soooo behind the technology curve, even my 1974 senior 26 has a better radar than your 2000 Broom 345 - ooo, hang on... D'oh /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Does not make sense, it works and then fades away.

Would have thought once the water sloshed and entered somewhere it shouldn't something would pop and your radar would die properly. From the information you gave it was a bit intermittent failing as it warmed up after 10 minutes.

Even if, say, the sand had got into the bearings of the scanner and as it got warm seized the scanner movement, your display would immediately through up a fault.

Interested to hear what you get back from Raymarine on this one, please keep us informed.

The sand could get in from 'Seagull $hit ', Seagulls eat sandy seafood sit on your radar and the sand gets washed out the crap into the radar crack ???????
Have you or the boat been anywhere that has a seagull problem ?
Dover
Falmouth
Grimsby
the list is endless, if you stayed long in Le Harve, that can get messy.

When you hose down the boat or when it rains the seagull crap looks clean but the sand is still there to be washed down any cracks.

I am an expert on seagull Pooh following a season in Dover one year when my Furuno played up in a similar way to your Radar, I didn't post this as I thought yours was more modern and couldn't have accumulated enough sand / $*** to cause a problem.

Quite possibly from a rain shower in the Med. There was a shower when we parked in Embiez near Toulon in late July which deposited a large quantity of red Saharan sand on my boat only minutes after I had washed it. You could say I had sense of humour failure
