Is it possible to hook up a radome onto a laptop chart plotting system to give a radar plotter as well as chart plotter what software would be required for this if it is at all possible as this seems to me to be a better option than looking at very small screens /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

No not really.
Older versions of Maxsea used to use something called MAPIS which could do it with the right (very expensive) add ons.
These days a lot of software like Maptech's chart navigator pro and Maxsea take advantage of the NMEA sentence TTM (tracked target marker), which require you to select the target(s) on the radar then its position is tracked and passed to your plotter software.
Nobeltec admiral version 8 has a dual screen arrangement and a black box for the radar...whaeras everything is controlled from the PC...but horrendously pricey for this sort of technology.

Basically it's not possible to get away without having a radar screen as well.

Raymarine have multi units which do both plotting and radar overlay.
