I would be grateful if anyone has mounted a radar (I'm using a B&G Halo20) on the mast of a Jeanneau 342 or similar as I cannot find any pics or info on line to give me any ideas as to pros and cons for mounting at different heights on the mast and then the cable runs etc..

Any general hints or tips for this task?

Thanks

Chris

Are you on / overwinter the West Coast of the Clyde? If on the west coast and your mast comes down each winter, perhaps on a stern pole may be better?

Otherwise, fallowing with interest as it's an upgrade I'm planning in not too long...

Yes, out by Crinan. We only take the mast down every 4 or so years at most and I did look at the rear pole mount but have opted for the mast as the best place for me.

I did think it would be easy to find some example pics on the web but it's not!

Put up a new radar a few years ago. I moved the bracket up the mast about a meter, so it was above the spinnaker topping lift and I made a hole in the base of the mast large enough to allow the plug to fit through. Also a large gland on the deck.

Now I have no joint in the cable, and the topping lift does not foul the dome.

Also let's me the option of putting an inner forestay for a storm sail which will also not foul the dome with the topping lift used as a halyard.

I also mounted an led spotlight under the dome within the bracket, as a deck light which is super.

Yes, I have looked at the issue of the uphaul and thought about moving the uphaul mast exit point down and utilise the existing hole for the cable to avoid moving the dome too far up.

Is that on a 342? Either way any pics?

Cheers

When I was trying to decide where and how to position my radar I found the is no ideal position as all have a compromise.

Mounting on the hast puts the weight high up the mast and the radar view aft is shadowed by the mast itsself.

On a mission mast there is a shadowed both for and aft

An offset of the radar to port of starboard there would be no shadow for or aft and if there is a shadow by the main mast its to one side.

I then decided to mount mine on a pole at the aft mounted on a goal post supporting my solar panels. This could shadow the solar panels but I decided to mount on the starboard side so when I moor my boat fo its port side is facing north ( I am in the southern hemisphere) I still get full sun on my solar panels for most of the day

Is this different to a SO34.2? That's all I get when searching the above. I have the Halo 20+ mounted to a SO36.2 if that's what it is...

Thanks for the pic, I think your mast is within a couple of feet of mine. As I mentioned above, the light and uphaul are in the way. How do you find the close up resolution / surface clutter with yours at that position?

Well I can see most pot markers so I feel it’s reasonably good! Honestly these radars are excellent so they will work well in most locations. The cable is Ethernet and I cut it to put a coupler in with some RJ45 connectors just below deck above the ceiling panels by the mast. Also needed a 3 pin connector for power and ground.
