Is anyone using an alarm device to detect radar? They're used a lot by single-handers but I never see them advertised. Quite keen to get hold of one. All suggestions welcome
The common radar detecting device is a directional receiver/display unit called C.A.R.D. I'm not sure if they are still available, suggest you check with your preferred marine electronics outlet.
The have been several devices on the market and maybe still are. I think the most known is/was the CARD which gives not only an alram, but also tries to give you a sector indication via LEDs.
In the past few years, new active radar reflectors have come onto the market, which combine this warning facility, with actively sending back an amplified echo, thus giving a much better target than any of the passive devices. The first one on the market was called Ocean Sentry, but there are some more now. It also has the advantage that you can go into stealth mode, by flipping a switch, which might be helpful in areas of piracy.
The warning device might be of little use, once you are way offshore. From what I have read, and that was confirmed by merchant ship masters, many of them turn off their radars when they are out of the shipping areas to keep down the wear.
Try Cruising Home in Bournemouth (www.cruisinghome.com) they advertise CARD and Watchman.
Don't know how effective they are - I bought the Small JRC radar as the price difference was only a couple of hundred and use the guard zone on timed transmit which is fine off shore
