racing this morning - was it sense?

I'm not a racer - with a Snapdragon 24, if I finish before the bar closes, I've probably won - but I found myself in some nasty wind and sea conditions off st Albans head this summer. With the benefit of hindsight, the fact that a Sigma 33 and a Contessa were going out probably wasn't the best of indications that SWMBO and I should leave Weymouth for Poole, but we all make mistakes. I probably should have been suspicious of a 4-6 forecast, too, but the synopsis suggested that this was a weather "window" before an atlantic low swept up the channel and we didn't want to get stuck.

Be that as it may, we were out there. It was nastly and uncomfortable. SWMBO was frightened but, while I was aware that we had plenty more wind and sea than we wanted, the boat was quite happy and was coping well with the conditions and I had plenty of sea room. Actually, I was enjoying myself!

Would I do it again? Not with just SWMBO & me on board. With a couple of strong, experienced crew, quite possibly. Am I glad I did it. Yes. Snappies have a reputation for being staid and slow. I now know they're also tough and seaworthy, probably tougher and more seaworthy than I am!
