Now that MBY has tested both the Princess R35 and the Fairline F33, am I the only one who is really keen to see a comparative test? They seem to target the same boater but with a different approach (and price tag): carbon fibre and active foiling system versus traditional GRP and trim tab setup. Just curious....I love them both, but SWMBO tells me I can only have one....

The problem with comparative tests is that one of them will have to come out as a loser. I can't imagine MBY wanting to upset either company ;)

They always used to have comparative tests. I guess they're just too hard to organize these days.

I suspect it's more to do with a changing world, than complications in organising. I would suggest that important customers, in this case advertisers, have to be more carefully nurtured since the heady pre-2008 days.

Fairline have messaged me to say that they would be delighted to put the F33 (which now has over 100 hours on it) up against the R35 in a "head to head"!

Hull #1 will be coming back to Oundle soon and they can make it available for a test then.

Come on Princess!

Assuming the price differential between the 2 is approaching £200k (iirc), then a comparison is not really worth it.

Depending on the spec the price difference is indeed 200-250k but in my view that could still make the comparison interesting. Both are open dayboats, both are 33-35ft, they cater for the same boating program etc. The price difference is in the technology and construction, so as a potential buyer i'd like to know if that price difference is warranted. If the ride on the F33 is equally good than on the R35, then the price gap is more difficult to explain. If there is a marked difference then the difference in price point is something I could consider. Practical points are also an important consideration, e.g. not that many marina boat yards will be able to repair carbon fibre for instance.
Anyway, still interested in getting the pros and cons compared for both boats.

I agree. The big difference in price for apparently similar boats seems a good reason for a comparison test.

I need to get time to write my own mini review of f33 on Pete’s original thread. I spent a day on it in Antibes a couple of weeks ago. I loved it - it was much more impressive than I expected. I got loads of action pics too

MBY have a full test of it in the works - on its own not a comparison, obvs.

I agree with Marc .
£200 K or what ever sticker asking price is gonna skew the buying decision so much that any extra real or perceived ride benefits aren’t going to matter .Of course it could be the other way round .
If it’s a price, no object in the equation then why not go the whole hog and toss in the S/Skr Hawk .
Sort of UK builders “three go mad in new boat launches “ :)

There’s a reason why ( moving up 3 /4 M ) the Aston and Merc AMG ,s things near £1M bombed .As good dynamically they were real or perceived.

As far as a villa toy I can’t see a extra few knots in flat seas or x% less or more vertical acceleration ( slamming ) effecting , moving the elephant in the room of the £200 K price difference between the two .

And I did a trial run on the R35 so we should compare notes :)

Pete, does that mean that Fairline follow closely the mobo forum or was it you that asked?
just curious!

So who are you saying will be reluctant to participate? The manufacturers or the magazine?

I would say the magazine, although if it did happen I suspect a very 'fair' conclusion that made them out both to be very good, if a little different ie they would both be winners but in different ways.

LOL, like win easy, P? :D
It doesn't take a lot of science to tell that the R35 can't be worth a quarter of a million more.
I'm positive about that even without having ever seen the actual boats in flesh!
