Many many years ago I fitted a pancake filter like that to a Mini. Made it a hell of a lot noisier than the standard paper element one!
I have a VP MD2020 and the air filter is just a lump of lightweight foam. I've wondered if a K & N type filter would be quieter. e.g. real K & N http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/K-N-Unive...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item53f7c5cdd4 or cheapo copy http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLUE-EASY...2320229362535&pid=100034&prg=7839&rk=1&rkt=4&
Interested to hear from anyone who has tried one.

I would think that it is a question of what makes most of the noise in your engine. It may be that a larger air filter/ silencer might reduce the noise but it also may be tha tit is already a reasonably quiet air filter compared to the noise produced by the combustion valves and exhaust.
If youy had a few metres of tubing similar in size to the air intake you could take the end far from the engine bay so in effect eliminate intake noise. (make it remote) then assess the engine noise. Did it make any real difference eliminating intake noise? If so then a big filter muffler would be worth having. good luck olewill
