Now I know that the Humber and its tidal tributaries are not exactly on the ‘A List’ when it comes to popular cruising grounds, but it never fails to amaze me how quiet they can be.

Take this Saturday for example. It must have been the best ever conditions on the Humber, mid thirties, blue skies and mirror-like calm. Yet we motored from S Ferriby up the Trent to West Stockwith, and back Sunday morning without seeing another cruiser AT ALL.

It was only when we played about in the Humber between Ferriby and Hull waiting for the afternoon’s tide, that we came across another cruiser at anchor. (Ironically this was another B27 that had travelled up from Kings Lynn).

When one considers all the millions of pounds worth of offshore machinery moored at the likes of Newark, Burton Waters (Lincoln), York, and Hull, all of which will require to access the Humber to extend their twin D’s much above 1000 rpm, it doesn’t make sense.

Anyway, following up from the meet between MedDreamer & myself last week, are there any other Humber region based forum members that would attend a get together if arranged? (or have I answered my own question with the opening remarks!).

The Broads, The Narrows - and The Tights

I think you have.

Most of us welded-tightfisted Yorkshire types associate boats with drowning, or getting deported, or leaving on global trips terminating in Something Nasty (qv Captain Cook), and worst of all, spending money. In Yorkshire, economic theory such as "Circular Flow of Income" remains just that - a theory. We don't let money through our hands and sometimes memorise the serial numbers. My dear Dad (Wakefield/Leeds) came round to our house ten years ago and was drenched from the rain, so SWMBO lent/gave him a pair of cords that were a bit short for me. He still has them and seems to wearem all the time. There's no chance of meeting big fat motor cruisers on the Humber. And even less chance on the Swale, Ure, Nidd, Wharfe, Aire, Calder, Don, Derwent or Ouse. They are all at home learning the names of Yorkshire rivers, walking over moors, watching telly, sitting in the car reading (or, to keep warm, in the blimmin garage, I'm not kidding) or participating in a host of other low-cost or preferably no-cost activities. We will all watch with incredulity and perhaps even spill a bit from our thermos flasks as you rumble past.

Your eulogy brought tears to my eyes - God's own county indeed

I'm glad that your still so attached to your roots and that you haven't been corrupted by those sophisticated southern types. I hope you did the decent thing with all those scantily clad young ladies and gave them an invoice for all services provided including wear and tear when you returned to port.

Certainly not. Although of course it is a very good and sensible suggestion, it is inbred in Yorkshirey types to be all welcoming and generous, spend oodles on fuel or food or drink etc and then refuse point blank any contribution. This unfortunately makes the guests feel a bit embarassed and awkward, but it can't be helped and they just have to get over it.

Judging by your boating passion, I guess you were from the family that lived in the lake, not the cardboard box in the road /forums/images/icons/smile.gif .

Hon. Pres

Martyn

Its common practice for associations to appoint a dignitary of some note as Honorary President. As he is an estimeed contributor to this forum I think we should ask TCM to take this position for the Northern MBC Club. My reasons for this are as follows:

1) He is a Yorkshireman (albeit doing missionary work in the South)
2) He has a much bigger boat that you and me
3) If he attends the meeting he may bring along some of those scantily clad young ladies (they will have to wear string vests underneath their bikinis however to cope with the cold).
4) Even if he can't attend he could still send the money to the Ship Inn or the H&A to stand his round.

We could add his name to the bottom of the Club letterheadings - it would give the begging letters that touch of class.

Was it a sketch? I though it was a fly-on-the-wall documentary

You can count me in so long as its not next week. Off to Gib for Day Skippers Practical. (and yes I do know you can take the same course in Hull).

Sunday was also a great day, motored down to Spurn Head. Anchored up in the bay with only four other boats for company. Got the dinghy out for a mess around on the beach. Wonderful day spoilt only by a minor Hiccup on the way back. see later post.
