i`ve only been out on my boat about 4 times but each time it gets a little slower.
i`m also finding that when i`m in neutral i can rev really well in reverse, but not in forwards!.(i know what i mean).
i suspected that the cable may have stretched a little and decided to investigate.
i took the controls off, took the plastic cover off the back,i think that as you look at it from the back the far control does forward/reverse and the one nearer to you is the throttle.
now then, what i did was got an 8 mm spanner onto the brass bit on the throttle cable and gave it about 15 half turns then went to put it back together to see if it was worse or better BUT as i was handling the controls a flat curved metal bar fell off,its about 3 inches long and does not appear to be broken BUT it seems to be able to go back on in about 4 different ways because there are 4 locating holes and the bar can be turned around(oh yes, this bar only seems to be held in by a metal cover that covers half the gubbins inside, which i also removed earlier.) i put the bar in different ways to see if the throttle cable would extend further or not,it did not seem to so i chucked it all back together and tried it.
It now revs even better in reverse and absolutly nothing in forwards.
i had to leave then,so here i am asking for any advice or info anybody can give me,please.please, please

Hi . The fact that it rev's in reverse tells me that its not the throttle cable. your profile gives very little away. What sort of boat & engine do you have? Have you checked that it will go in forward gear at the gearbox?

the boat is a shetland 536,the engine is an older(80`s)murcury 70.it has been running fine when ingaged in forward,(but reving less each time i go out).when the control is pushed forward when in neutral it hardly reved at all, only just going above tick over speed.(so it revs more in gear than in nuetral).
the control is a single lever with the button at the base of the lever to use nuetral with 2 control cables, the choke is on the key switch(press in key to choke).

The metal tab that feel out. Has it got a U shaped cut out in it and 2 holes either end. If it has it sounds like a cable clamp. That may be your answer. Then again........it may not be!!

if it's a quicksiler commander 3000 unit then if you pm me your eMail address I can send you a .pdf file of the installation and user manual. Covers both side and top mount units. It's a big file (6mb) so make sure you can accept it. I suspect it will give you what you want even if it's a slightly different model.

got it,completly different set up inside, your one looks more modern more refined it looks like they have got rid of the spring and a few fulcrum points.
thanks for trying though, much appreciated,i`m off down to the boat in about an hour and i think i`ll take my camara so i can post a pic on here to see if anyone recognises the model.
i`m taking a mechanically minded man with me,but if you see a big ploom of smoke coming from poole, that`ll be me.
thanks again.
i will come back to this thread to post any results.

thanks duncan, boats at mitchells boat yard(parkstone bay i think they like to call it now.)at whitecliffe.
just been down to boat and took controls off.
found that the adjustments i was making on the cable near the control box was no good because the connection was seized together,i think i was just binding the cable and the sleeve around together,i reversed the adjustments and freed up the connecter and readjusted it.
also we relocated that banana shaped flat bit of metal.
all seems to be working smoother but it was low tide and boat was sat on the deck so we could not start up to test it.
fingers crossed.try to get out tomorrow wife and baby permiting.
will post again with success rate.

nearly duncan, its an aqua blue/green type colour with white deck, all original, not painted.
went out to it at 6 oclock this morning, what a great time to go out.
started it up,hey presto, reving again, get rid of the mooring, quick belt around ,got it planing/plaining/planning/planeing,woke up some poor sod on his yacht moored near the main channel, sorry mate.
great,usable once again.
not convinced its reving to top rpm though but i`ll get the engine cover off and try it manually another day.
i may just get through this season, save up a bit of money and get a decent control box.
thanks for all your help.
much appreciated.
