Quick windless conversion kit

We have a quick electric windless , It always been on the back of my mind if the motor packed up we will have a bit of a problem lifting the anchor , ok not impossible , but with a bad back ( three disks out over time ) lifting 20 kg anchor and X amount of 10 mm chain in any thing but light winds could be a bit painful , this year it came to pass , the motor packed up. In case the problem happens again or a failed power supply , I like to try and some how converted it the Manuel as well as power , has any one managed to do this , ?
When the motor was removed to be repaired I found that is was very early to turn the gear box with my finger , the motor will turned freely with no power going thought it , quick says they don't do a conversion kits .
so other then replaces it with a different windless , any ideas .

When you say you could spin the gearbox with your finger, was this from the motor end or the output end?

It's probably a worm/wheel gearbox, so the problem is that it will freely spin from the input end, but you can't spin it from the output end (it doesn't allow backwinding due to inherent design of a worm/wheel box). This is all presuming you have a vertical windlass.

At Lewmar, we provide kits which are fitted on top of the gypsy in such an event, essentially disconnecting the gypsy from the drive system, yet have a ratchet in to prevent backwind when manually cranking in.

I'd be surprised if there is no solution offered by Quick along similar lines.

yes you quite right it is from the motor end and it is a vertical .
In the past I had a word with a few dealer and they all said the same I would need to buy a different type of windless , I also would had thought there be some kind of kit , I really don't want to go to the expense of replace it also it would prob mean drill more holes and it would have to be a particularly type of size to fit the anchor locker lid .
We live on the hook 8/9 months a year so we really depend on it , once upon a time lifting 20 kgs anchor and 50 mts of chain wasn't a problem but the years are setting in now and the back not that great .
