Reading the Plop! thread, many recomend wearing a life jacket. All well and good. I put one on as soon as i get the boat keys out and insist on the short people wearing one all the time as do I the wife.

Now, come on be honest. Who wears a life jacket while on the water and who doesn't. Don't need long winded answers just a ye or nay.

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

Not that I'm proud to admit it ..

But only if out of cockpit at night - and yes it does have a light.

I take the view that even with the family on board I am to all intents and purposes singlehanded so the chance of being picked up is very close to zero

Barry,

What I find fascinating as the person who posted "plop" is that everyone who answered your post and straw poll had thought carefully about when they wore a LJ. Obviously the largest group of all are those that aren't as interested and didn't complete the poll. Most I guess would answer "never", and a small minority "always".

The intersting thing about the question I posed is that I bet that 90% of the people that swim (and who perhaps can less easily understand why others can't or may have a cause or a history to cause reasonable fear of water) state "you must swim just do it". Others, and perhaps the non swimmers say "take care, don't fall in, wear a LJ, and swimming just makes you suffer longer".

I'm simply going to always wear a LJ and make my wife do the dangerous stuff as she always has done.

100% of the time cos my boats a RIB and its the safe thing to do. In fact I have a simple rule of "no lifejacket, no come in the boat" although I occasionally flex it for those wearing BCD's or diving drysuits.

Another perhaps more pertinent question would be "how many of you wear a lifejacket whilst in your tender"? Aboard most big moatyboats the need might not be there unless one is scrambling around the foredeck, rough weather etc. But in a small tender on the way back from the pub in the dark with the tide flowing??
(Unless of course you alway spend your times in Marina's!)
