Apologies for another anchor type query but I can't find an answer to this one anywhere

Ive just fitted a Quick Genius 1000w Windlass - using 20m of 8mm chain but need to purchase suitable rope for the rode and have a technical issue with the rope to acquire:

My preference is 8 plait as it will stow nice an easy is soft and supple etc etc but will it work on the Quick Genius? I am looking for anyone with experience of this model and the rope they are using, and if using the 8 plait is it working fine.

I would really like to avoid the usual muddle of salt water stiffened rope wrapping up in the anchor locker which will inevitably occur at the most inopportune time.

I would appreciate any help by way of experience, thanks

Why the need for a windlass if just 20m chain?
We have spliced 30m of 3 strand on the end of our chain - but it is rarely used as on the end of 55m of chain.
As such the few times we have used the rope there has been no weight on it when pulling the rope in, and it would have probably slipped if there was any weight on it.

I have a Quick 1000w that uses octoplait spliced to 10mm chain no bother. Not sure whether it's a Genius though.

I have a similar set up to yours with the 8mm capstan but I chose to stick with my existing rode of 30metres of chain spliced to 40 metres of 16mm multiplait and see how I got on. The problem is that the splice doesn't get through the capstan particularly well either way and when the multiplait is under tension when it will obviously also be wet has a tendency to slip as it elongates. I have investigated and see that Quick offer a made up rode that consists of 16mm 3 strand spliced to the chain with their own patented slim splice which is difficult to see how to replicate.

A recent PBO article demonstrated a 3 strand back splice to chain that was recommended for capstans and would be the route I will take when I renew my rode.

The Quick website specifies a size (basically, about half an inch IIRC) for three strand rope for the various Quick Genius gypsies for different sized chains. (Note that this is for the new Genius GP2 models, but I would be surprised if the gypsies have changed from the previous models. It will in any case be in the manual for the particular windlass you have.)

So 3 strand is good and will work, and they give you the correct size (or range of sizes) to use. As I read it they are not saying nothing else will work, but it will be up to you to suck it and see - a different type of rope may need a different size, or work less well due to stretching as previously mentioned.

Thank you everyone - I think the essence here is that 3 stand will work and 8 plait might. I just recieved an email from Quick which has just said exactly that too and that trial and error is all they can recommend. I like the suggestion to give a few metres of 8 plait a try and will progresss down that route unless someone posts the silver bullet technique that I can simply copy.

Quick specify 3 strand polyester rope of 1/2" (12.7 mm) diameter for the Genius windlasses

I think 8 plait nylon is better in every way for an anchor rode but if it won't work with the Quick gypsy then that's that unfortunately. You could buy a a few metres of 8 plait and try it.

Fast forward to today and I have the same dilemma: I have a quick 1000W and would like to extend my 8mm chain with 8 plait rope. Did you try?

How did you guys get on with this? Need to get some additional rode to splice onto my chain. Quick say 1/2" but since rope is bought in metric sizes I can either go 12mm or 14mm. No guarantee either will work.

I have a Quick 1000W something with 8mm chain - it doesn't like 14mm octoplait, tries to chew it up with the chain stripper plate. Quite happy with 1/2" 3-strand and 12mm braid-on-braid though both were only used on one occasion.

A couple of years ago I spent some time looking for a windlass that would work with 14 mm octoplait and 8 mm chain. The only manufacturer who would unequivocally state that theirs would was Maxwell.
I didn't buy one as they cost more than I could justify for the limited amount of anchoring I do.

8 mm chain with Octoplait works fine on my Quick genius windlass. I’m not sure of the Octoplait diameter but will check for you. The rope/chain back splice usually goes through the gypsy OK, but occasionally needs a brief help if there’s any real weight on the rode.
