How do I test the sender on my Quick chain counter. There is a magnet in the gypsie that rotates above a sensor in the base plate . I can get to the two leads from the sensor what do I set the multimeter to read and what should I expect when magnet passes sensor. Trying to eliminate bits of the puzzle.

You will probably see a low voltage there which will alter as the magnet passes.

Thanks but what do I set multi to read ,I am very ignorant re electrics , what should I set scale to. Should I also disconnect sensor whilst doing reading, does magnet induce current, O level is where I got off.

The sensor is just a reed switch. Easy to check with a meter.

Set the meter to ohms x 1
Check that the needle deflects (or it reads 0.00 if digital) when the leads are together
Disconnect the leads from the sensor wiring and join a meter lead to each one
Use any spare magnet to pass over the sensor and check for movement on the meter
If no movement is detected, then it's probably a fault with the sensor.
If you do see some movement, then it's the gypsy magnet at fault. This was a problem I had on mine. The magnet was so corroded that it didn't have enough magnetism to actuate the reed switch

Don't buy a magnet from Quick. Just clean up the locating hole and measure the depth and diameter.
Amazon sell these, but check what size you need. Slightly smaller than the hole is fine. Just epoxy it in.

I assumed it would be a Hall Effect sensor, which won't work when disconnected, and could be damaged by a meter on Ohms scale. Much safer to measure the voltage, start on the 20V DC range and reduce until a reading is found.

Some manufacturers use a Hall Effect sensor, eg autoanchor. My Quick had a reed switch.

Thanks for the reply, so it will not actually measure if the wheel is rotating left or right, it is just assuming that it will go in the direction that the buttons are pressed ? Maybe in 2 % of all causes , there is an electrical error where the wheel will rotate in the wrong direction, the sensor can't detect that i think.
