Quick Anchor question

It is time I renewed my anchor ... I've currently got a CQR clone as a main anchor and fortress as kedge. I'm pretty happy with the performance of these, so will probably get the same again. Size is important as I need to be able to stow in the anchor locker.

So, with size and type sorted ... what colour should I go for?

As you haven't filled in your profile we can't tell if you have an AWB or a MAB.

If an AWB, get a nice freshly galvanised one and be sure never to get it dirty. For a MAB, dissolve away the galvanising (battery acid is good for this) then leave out in the rain to get rusty.

Sorted.

Sorry ... it's an AWB ... but it does get a bit manky at times ... especially when I haven't cleaned it up after launching a tender down a muddy slipway ...

I was thinking of getting a sandy coloured one so it blends into the seabed at East Head a bit more ...

but they missed the crucial colouring section out ... there were a few numbers, but no mention of what colours to use. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Waste of time if they are not going to do a thorough report ... naturally I shall be cancelling my free subscription immediately

Seems sensible - it'll make a nice checkered pattern with the nav light when the anchor is on the bow ... but will the fish and crabs realise that they have to give way?

Recent Chinese developments in high-modulus (i.e "strong") plastics are leading to the moulding of anchors and - ultimately, it is hoped - chains as well. These combine light weight, UV resistance, immunity from rusting, and the option to choose whatever colour takes your fancy, including that of complete transparency, presumably so that no-one else can see your anchor and steal it.

Designs are to be copied from the current crop of rolled steel and cast anchors, and one option is to have your boat name injection moulded into the flatter portions.

ooOOOOoo ... now - you really need to add that to a recent "Pimp my boat" thread on the mobo forum ... I wonder if they'll set some LEDs into the anchor (solar powered of course) so you can see where it has set?

It should definitely be white. This is because the force of sunlight will exert a small pressure, which will help the anchor set.

I have no independent testing with which to verify this.

Possibly this is an argument for highly polished stainless steel. Yes, maybe the 4x price tag is justified after all.

Spade claim the best color is yellow. Unfortunately this is clearly wrong.

No matter which color you choose...

...you must have matching chain:

Of course this is more difficult with some "up-market" designs which pay more attention to detail:

I like the camouflaged one - perhaps I should get one of those so them stinkies can't see my anchor when it gouges their sides because they haven't given way ... "Can't be me gov - no anchor on the bow - look .... " /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
